In the 2010 Sylvania 300 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Tony Stewart ran out of fuel while leading late in the race to give Clint Bowyer the lead and race win. This year’s Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday was sort of déjà vu in reverse, as Bowyer led the race late, only to run out of fuel with three laps remaining, turning the lead and race win over to Stewart.

“I know exactly how he (Bowyer) feels right now,” Stewart said in victory lane.

After heading into the Chase for the Sprint Cup winless, Stewart claimed his second-straight win in the second Chase race of the season to go 2-0 in NASCAR’s 2011 “postseason.”

“There’s still eight races left,” Stewart said of his title shot. “It’s way too early to start counting chickens.”

Brad Keselowski finished second, Greg Biffle was third, Jeff Gordon fourth, and Brian Vickers rounded out the top-five.

Ryan Newman started from the pole and led the way until Kasey Kahne took the lead from him right before a cycle of green flag pit stops on lap 61.

Kahne and Gordon then exchanged the lead back and forth throughout much of the rest of the race, with the lead swapping hands primarily because of varying pit strategies. Those varying strategies resulted in Kahne having to make an extra pit stop for fuel late in the race.

Gordon nearly stretched the fuel issue too far when he made his final stop of the day with 71 laps remaining. He ran out of fuel on pit road, which resulted in a lengthy stop. During that same stop, his crew suffered a fueling issue, that sent Gordon into fuel conservation mode in the final laps. He gave away a couple of positions late in the race in an effort to save fuel.

“It’s a bit of a surprise to all of us that we ran out under green,” Gordon said.

Bowyer claimed the top spot with 50 laps remaining and maintained the lead until he ran out of fuel with three laps to go and Stewart moved to the front.

Bowyer wasn’t the only driver who ran out of fuel in the closing laps. Denny Hamlin also ran out of fuel with three laps remaining. Biffle ran out of fuel on the final lap but had enough momentum and was close enough to the start/finish line to hold on to third spot.
