Immanuel Lutheran Church is now hiring for a Youth and Family Ministry Director. Pastoral: Minister to youth and their families during Sunday School and other church programs, being present in their lives outside the church walls, available for common concerns and in crisis situations. Leadership: Recruit and nurture Youth and Family Ministry program. Administration : Manage the planning process and coordinate with Pastor and Youth Committee all regular ministries to youth and their families. This includes youth of all ages on Sunday mornings and mid-week events; assisting with Confirmation, special events, trips and retreats, and parent meetings. Stewardship: Ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of youth programs, manage youth ministry budget, and collaborate with the sponsors of each Youth group. Ability to build, lead, and empower youth. Ability to implement a ministry vision. Familiarity with Lutheran Doctrine required; must be comfortable teaching it and representing Lutheran Theology. Proficient computer skills using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database, email, internet, and social media. Supervisory experience preferred. Ability to adapt and evaluate curriculum preferred. Must have excellent organization, communication (verbal and written), and listening skills, with a high degree of initiative and accountability. Exceptional interpersonal and relational skills required, with sensitivity to church members and visitors. Understanding and enjoyment of youth and families and guiding their spiritual development. Lydia Emma Berckenhoff Merecka, a longtime resident of Floresville, Texas, entered eternal rest Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at 10:20 a.m. in the Regency Manor Nursing Home in Floresville at the age of 88 years, 10 months, and 24 days. Lydia was born Oct. 28, 1922, in Shiner, the daughter of Edmund and Bertha Jahn Berckenhoff.

She married William Merecka on Oct. 9, 1943, in Nashville, Tenn. William, Lydia’s beloved husband of more than 38 years, preceded her in death on April 4, 1982. Lydia was a cafe owner, a department store clerk, a homemaker, and a mother. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Merecka; her son, Donald Wayne Merecka; her daughter, Marjorie Merecka; her sister, Lorraine Merecka; her close cousin, Otto Berckenhoff; and her sisters and brothers-in-law, Val and Lillie Chilek, Viola Sralla, Emil Merecka, and August Merecka.

Lydia is survived by her daughter, Marlene Talamantez and husband Leroy of Floresville; her sons, Vaughn Merecka and wife Margie, and Glen Merecka and wife Traniece, all of Floresville; her grandchildren, Denise Kleiber and husband Brian, Lee Talamantez and wife Nannell, Donald Merecka and wife Frances, and Blaine Merecka; her great-grandchildren, Sydney and Samantha Merecka and Cameron and Ava Talamantez; her sister-in-law, Rosie Norris; her brothers-in-law, Albert Sralla and Victor Merecka; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Thursday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday at 1 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville, with Father Phillip Henning officiating.

Interment followed in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Floresville.

Serving as pallbearers were Lydia’s grandsons, Donald Merecka, Blaine Merecka, Lee Wayne Talamantez, and Brian Kleiber; and her nephews, Nathan Merecka and Robert Merecka.
