The La Vernia High School junior varsity Lady Bear volleyball team has competed in two tournaments this season, and the first was the La Vernia Sub-Varsity Tournament held Sept. 10.

The Lady Bears took first place in their tournament, going unbeaten against Somerset, Navarro, and then Pleasanton in the championship game. Karaline Campbell, Sara Hill, Morgan Mikes, and Kim De La Torre contributed many kills throughout the tournament. These girls played well finding the holes and hitting the ball hard. Katy Scott, Rachel Henkes, and Kacey Reinen also helped out in the front by setting the block and getting touches on the ball to slow it down for the back row. Assisting the hitters were Kirsten McDowell, Mikes, and Scott.

“These girls did an excellent job moving the ball around and keeping the other teams off-balance,” Coach Michelle Uribe said. “Our back-row players had many digs and kept the ball in play giving good passes to the setters and by covering the hitters.”

Back-row players for La Vernia include Wendy Juarez, Mariel McFaddin, Lauren Burkett, and Shaley Trammell. Uribe said it was the team’s overall effort that earned them first place in the tournament.

The following Saturday, the team traveled to Wimberley for another tournament. This one consisted of 16 dominating teams and the girls really had to earn every win they got.

The first opponent the Lady Bears faced was Kerrville Tivy. The team had to play smart because these girls were big. Shutting them down with the block was the key to winning this game, and executing in that role were Hill, De La Torre, Campbell, Mikes, Henkes, and Scott. If by chance Kerrville got by the La Vernia block, the defense was there to pick up the ball. Lady Bear diggers Juarez, Burkett, and McFaddin were all over the court, keeping the ball in play. Serving several points in a row were McDowell and Reinen, who combined for more than 10 aces on the day. The final score was 25-20, 25-18.

The story was the same for La Vernia’s match with Rouse. Although these girls were big, they were no match for the Lady Bears’ timely blocking, hard hitting, and smart play. La Vernia’s passing was on point, which helped to get kill after kill. Before they knew it, Rouse had nothing to respond with. The final score was 25-22, 25-18.

La Vernia moved on to clinch one of the top four spots in the tournament. The Lady Bears’ next opponent was Wimberley, and unfortunately, the Lady Texans got the best of La Vernia, winning 25-15 and 25-21. La Vernia made a valiant effort to come back after the first set, but just fell short.

From there, it was on to the third-place game for La Vernia. The opponent was Hays High School, and the Lady Bears won the first set 25-19, but then lost the next two sets in very close rallies, 27-25 and 28-26. The loss gave La Vernia a fourth-place finish in the tournament.

“The team played very well, especially against their tough competitors,” Uribe said. “I am very proud of the way they played.”
