Town East Eagles blow out Lifegate in 6-man battle
Town East 67
SEGUIN -- The Town East Eagles were looking for a little payback when they traveled to Seguin this past weekend to play Lifegate. Fortunately the team was up to the task, and Town East returned home with a lopsided 67-20 win.
Lifegate came out strong to start the game, scoring on its second play from scrimmage, but the Eagles came right back as Dante Johnson ran for 45 yards and a touchdown. Town East then came up with a big defensive stop, and capitalized with another score to go on top 14-6.
The Eagle defense played well throughout the first half, and kept the Falcon offense from generating any sort of rhythm. Town East created a number of turnovers, and turned them into touchdowns, giving the visiting Eagles a 36-6 advantage after the first quarter of play.
Ben Guerra connected with Drevion Williams to start the second quarter on a passing play that went for 60 yards and another 6 points.
Lifegate was able to add to its score shortly thereafter on a passing play, but the Eagles still led 44-14, and then scored again to make it a 52-14 contest.
At that point in the game, play was stopped due to an injury. Lifegate junior Jayson Mittelberg sustained a neck injury and was airlifted to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Fortunately, the school has reported that Mittelberg suffered a neck sprain and is expected to make a full recovery.
Once play resumed after an hour-long stoppage, the Eagles went back on the offensive and added to their score. The Falcons were able to up their score to 20, but Town East dominated the contest en route to a 67-20 victory.
Williams caught three touchdown passes in the game and Johnson ran for more than 200 yards.
“We played extremely well,” said Town East Head Coach Robert Davis. “It was the best game we played all year. We were hitting on all cylinders.”
The win lifted the Eagles to 4-1 on the year, and the team is now 2-0 in district play. Town East will play its first home game of the year this Friday, Sept. 30, as they host Boerne Geneva, the state’s No. 3-ranked team. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wiseman Field in La Vernia.
