Mustangs shock Dilley Wolves in double-overtime win
Nixon-Smiley 43 (2OT)
DILLEY -- As District 14-2A play got under way last Friday, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs were hoping to begin the season with a win, and that is exactly what they got as they shocked the Dilley Wolves at home in a thrilling 43-42 double-overtime win.
After a scoreless first quarter to start the game, the Wolves struck first as they scored on a 24-yard run from scrimmage by Will Urban. Dilley then scored its second touchdown of the game a few minutes later, as Dalton Foster ran into the end zone to put Dilley on top 14-0 with 7:22 to play in the half.
Never ones to quit, however, the Mustangs battled hard with their ground game and found the end zone with 2:53 to play. Miguel Hernandez earned the touchdown as he outran the Dilley defense 31 yards for the score. Alex Hernandez kicked the extra point for Nixon-Smiley, and the score stood at 14-7.
The Mustang defense must have been in the moment, as the unit quickly gave the ball back to the offense with enough time left for another score. Quarterback Jaime Moreno eventually found an open Garrett Earlywine, who made the catch for 9 yards and a touchdown. As time expired in the half, the teams were all tied up at 14-all.
Nixon-Smiley took its first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter, as Moreno capped off a strong Nixon-Smiley drive with a 1-yard run into the end zone. The point-after was good, and it was a 21-14 affair.
But Dilley was far from done, and Orlando Bernal immediately turned things around as he returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a Dilley touchdown. With 8:21 to play, the teams were separated by a point at 21-20, following a failed extra-point attempt.
The game went back and forth, and Nixon-Smiley drove down into Dilley territory, giving Jared VanAuken the opportunity to score his first touchdown of the game. He ran in from 2 yards out, and the Mustangs increased their lead. But with time running down, Urban found Leonardo Garcia for a 6-yard touchdown pass for Dilley. The Wolves were successful on the 2-point conversion, and the teams were tied at 28-28 with just six seconds to play in regulation. With the teams deadlocked, the game moved to overtime.
The Wolves went on offense first in overtime, and Urban capped off a Dilley scoring drive with a 2-yard run into the end zone. The Mustangs responded with a touchdown of their own, though, as Robbie Mejia pulled down a 15-yard passing strike from Moreno.
In the second overtime session, Urban again ran in for Dilley, this time from 5 yards out, and Juan Cantu kicked the point-after, and the Wolves went back on top, 42-35. Nixon-Smiley made the most of its next possession, too, and Miguel Hernandez put the Mustangs within a point with his touchdown run of 8 yards. While another extra point would have tied the game and sent it into triple overtime, the Mustangs completed the 2-point conversion as Earlywine threw a short pass to VanAuken for the win, 43-42.
Miguel Hernandez led the Mustang offense with 141 rushing yards, followed by Alex Hernandez with 89 yards, and VanAuken with 59. Moreno also ran 12 times for 50 yards. In total, the Mustangs ran the ball 69 times for 339 yards. Moreno completed four of nine passes for 45 yards. Earlywine reeled in 24 yards on three catches, Mejia had 15 reception yards, and Damian Perez caught a pass for 12 yards.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 3-2 on the year, and are now 1-0 in district play after handing the Wolves their first loss of the year. Nixon-Smiley will play at home this Friday, Sept. 30, as the Mustangs host the unbeaten Poth Pirates. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
