Falls City 43

Woodsboro 0

WOODSBORO -- The 2011 football season didn’t start exactly as the defending state champs had hoped, but after Falls City all but destroyed the Woodsboro Eagles 43-0 in their District 16-1A opener last Friday, the Beavers are back on track and working toward another strong playoff run.

Falls City wasted little time against Woodsboro before scoring its first touchdown of the game. Tyler Wiatrek did the honors for the Beavers, as he ran in from 3 yards out, less than two minutes from the opening kickoff. Wiatrek then ran in the 2-point conversion, and Falls City led 8-0.

Phillip Lyssy scored the Beavers’ second touchdown of the game as he carried it in on a 1-yard run from scrimmage late in the first quarter, and Eric Wiatrek scored the third touchdown of the game on a 21-yard run early in the second. Scott Lyssy kicked both extra points for Falls City, and the Beavers led 22-0 with 11:02 still remaining in the first half.

To say Falls City was in complete control of the game would be an understatement. Still, the team wasn’t ready to let up just yet. Tyler Wiatrek ran in his second touchdown of the game from a yard out with 7:08 to play in the half, and Phillip Lyssy scored on a 21-yard run with 1:42 remaining on the clock. Scott Lyssy remained perfect on extra points, and the Beavers led 36-0 as they headed for the locker room.

Things did slow down a bit in the second half, but the game never got away from Falls City. The Beavers dominated on defense, and did pretty much whatever they wanted on offense. With 6:06 to play in the fourth, Tyler Wiatrek scored his third touchdown of the game on a 16-yard run, and Scott Lyssy kicked the extra point to make the final score 43-0.

The Beavers ran for more than 300 yards in the game, and threw for another 96. Meanwhile, Woodsboro was held to just 59 total yards of offense. The Eagles earned just one first down during the entire game, and were forced to punt the ball away seven times.

Tyler Wiatrek led the Beaver running game with 107 yards on six carries, followed by Cameron Soto with 70 yards on three carries. Jon Swierc earned 52 yards, Phil-lip Lyssy ran for 50, and Kendall Kanak tallied 28 yards on four carries. Dean Gaskamp picked up another 7 yards. Soto completed all three of his passing attempts for 92 yards, while Phillip Lyssy caught two passes for 49 yards, and Wade Jimerson pulled in the other for 43.

The victory puts the Beavers’ season record at 3-2. Falls City will return home this week to face the Pettus Eagles, with kickoff set at 7:30 p.m.
