Floresville tops Antonian to give Baker his 100th win
Floresville sophomore running back Hector Villegas looks for running room during the Tigers' 24-7 Homecoming win over Antonian.
FLORESVILLE -- Going into last Friday night’s home game with Antonian, Floresville Head Football Coach John Baker had 99 wins on his résumé. Following a 24-7 victory and a celebratory ice bath in that game, however, Baker has now reached the century mark.
The Tigers earned their first touchdown of the night at the 4:48 mark of the first quarter when quarterback Colby Shodrock capped off a Tiger drive with a 1-yard run into the end zone. Esteban Mireles came on for the extra point, and the Homecoming crowd celebrated in Floresville.
Midway through the second quarter of play, the Tigers drove deep into Apache territory, and sophomore running back Hector Villegas earned 5 of his 174 yards en route to the end zone. Mireles kicked the extra point, and the score stood at 14-0 with 4:46 to play in the half.
The Floresville defense did a good job, and worked hard to keep Antonian pinned deep in its own territory. The Apaches were looking to make something big happen in the final minute of the first half, but unfortunately for them, that “something big” went in favor of Floresville, as senior linebacker Tommy Pardo snatched the ball out of midair and returned it 35 yards for a Tiger touchdown. Mireles remained perfect on extra points, and Floresville took a 21-0 advantage into halftime.
With a solid lead in the game, the Tigers looked to play an error-free second half of football, intent on protecting their lead and managing the clock. The Tigers did a good job in that regard, even adding a Mireles 26-yard field goal with 7:10 to play in the third, to make it a 24-0 contest.
Late in the third quarter, Antonian found its way onto the scoreboard by way of a 1-yard touchdown run from Sterling Holmes. Diego Valdes kicked the extra point, and the score stood at 24-7.
The defense played another excellent game for Floresville, with solid hits and tackles coming from all over the field. Matthew Crockett and Dominique DeWalt played solid in the secondary, and delivered a number of big hits on Apache receivers. Special teams were also solid for Floresville, coming up with good plays on two onside kicks.
The Tiger offense, paced by Villegas, controlled the ball well and put together several sustained drives that took valuable time off the clock. One late drive in the game consumed a whopping eight minutes off the clock.
In addition to the 174-yard effort by Villegas, Deron Taylor ran the ball five times for 50 yards, and Shodrock had four carries for 10 yards. Shodrock also completed six of 10 passing attempts for 87 yards, with 74 of those yards credited to Jacob Flores on four receptions. DeWalt caught one pass for 7 yards, and Trey Gillis brought in another for 6 yards.
The Tigers improve to 3-2 on the year as Baker picks up his 100th victory. Floresville will now enjoy a bye week as they prepare for their first District 30-4A game of the season. The Tigers will travel to Gregory-Portland Friday, Oct. 7, to face the Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
