Bandera 34
La Vernia 63

LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Bears dominated on the football field Friday, Sept. 23, during their Homecoming game against the Bandera Bulldogs. The Bears came out on top by the final score of 63-34.
The Bulldogs gave Bear fans a quick scare after scoring first early in the first quarter, but the home team quickly tied it up with a touchdown from Landon Richter and an extra point from Alec Dews. The Bears kept up the momentum with an amazing 59-yard touchdown run from Aaron Grubb to give La Vernia the lead.
The Bears didn’t let up, and were soon in control of the ball again when Kenny Moehrig intercepted a Bulldog pass. La Vernia used the interception to its advantage and Grubb scored another touchdown, giving his team a 21-7 lead with the extra point from Dews.
The second quarter started off with another touchdown for the Bears on a 33-yard pass from Jose Sahagun to Josh Rutledge. With Dews kicking the extra point, La Vernia went up 28-7. This time, the Bulldogs answered back with their own touchdown on a 36-yard pass, bringing the score to 28-14.
The third quarter saw an interception right off the bat for Grubb. The Bears scored once again and were now in a commanding lead against the Bulldogs, 34-14. The defense turned up the heat on Bandera and Jake Wiatrek recovered a fumble, which led the Bears to score once again. Bandera answered with a touchdown, bringing the score to 42-20 with the Bears still sitting comfortably.
With La Vernia in control of the ball again, Grubb ran the ball another 59 yards to score. Dews continued to knock in the extra points for the Bears, who were now up 49-20. Both teams scored toward the end of the third quarter, but Bandera wasn’t able to gain enough momentum to catch the Bears.
La Vernia finished off the game with an incredible 69-yard touchdown run by Dews, who also kicked the extra point and brought the game to a 63-34 final.
Leading the scoring for the Bears was Grubb with three touchdowns. Richter scored two touchdowns for La Vernia, and Sahagun, Rutledge, Seth Schonert, and Donald Davenport each contributed a touchdown for the Bears.
The win was La Vernia’s first of the season, and the team’s record now stands at 1-3. The Bears will travel to Cuero this Friday, Sept. 30, to face the Gobblers. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
