POTH -- Once again, the much-anticipated football game between county rivals Stockdale and Poth took place last Friday night. Bragging right was not the only thing on the line, either, as the contest also marked the beginning of District 14-2A competition. With every game being of the utmost importance on the track to the playoffs, head coaches Josh West of Stockdale and Andrew King of Poth were well-prepared for what is always a hard-fought battle.
As was expected by all, the Brahma defense got a heavy dose of star Pirate running back Phillip Garza. Although the Brahmas did a better job than most at containing Garza, the junior put the first points on the board with a 12-yard scoring run with 3:43 left in the first quarter. A Braden Lyssy kick then gave the Pirates a 7-0 first-quarter lead.
Despite a fine display by the Brahmas’ defensive secondary, including interceptions by Dusty Mosier, Robert Bischak, and senior defensive lineman Kelson Alderman, the Pirates were also able to score through the air. With 9:50 left in the second quarter, senior Pirate quarterback Braden Lyssy dropped back and looked deep down the field. Just as a Brahma defender was about to sack the Pirate signal caller for a loss, senior guard Hunter Dugi peeled back and delivered a crushing block to give Lyssy time to find fellow senior Antonio Cantu down the middle of the field for a 68-yard touchdown. The Lyssy kick gave the Pirates a 14-0 lead going into halftime.
The visiting Brahmas had their own workhorse to wear the defense down in senior Trevor Baumann. Baumann showed versatility by passing for a first down on a fake punt to preserve a drive that would eventually lead to a 5-yard touchdown run by Baumann with 3:21 to play in the third quarter. Senior Colton West added the kick, and the Brahmas were quickly within one score at 14-7.
A hard-hitting, ball-hawking Pirate defense was the difference in the game. With Lyssy, Kyle Pruski, Dugi, and Cantu swarming to the ball, even the hard-running Baumann found it difficult to gain any momentum. Constant pressure on Brahma quarterback Colton West kept the visitors’ passing game from ever gaining any ground. Garza’s two interceptions capped a very impressive effort by the home team’s defense.
With the defense keeping the ball in the Pirates’ hands, Lyssy and the offense were able to find room to move the ball. Then, with 9:23 left in the contest, Lyssy broke through the middle of the line and found himself in a footrace to the end zone. He would win the 36-yard race scoring a touchdown. A failed kick left the Pirates with a 20-7 lead.
Crucial defensive plays by Lyssy and the Pirates dampened any hopes of a Brahma comeback. Then, with 2:32 left in the contest, Lyssy added another scoring run from 2 yards out and the Poth Pirates took the county bragging rights. The 26-7 Poth win improved the Pirates’ record to 5-0 with that ever-important district victory.
This week, the Pirates travel to Nixon-Smiley to take on the Mustangs, while the Brahmas welcome the Three Rivers Bulldogs as District 14-2A play continues. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
