NIXON -- It may have been Homecoming for the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs last Friday, but it was anything but a celebration for the home team as the Poth Pirates dominated the game en route to a 51-14 final score.

The Pirates came out swinging in the first quarter -- scoring early and often. The first of seven Poth touchdowns in the game came less than two minutes from the opening kickoff, as senior quarterback Braden Lyssy connected with junior Phillip Garza for 41 yards and 6 points. Lyssy then booted the extra point, and the Pirates held an early 7-0 lead.

Nixon-Smiley tried to get its ground game rolling with a steady diet of Jared VanAuken and Alex Hernandez, but the Poth defense came up with every stop that was needed.

Back on offense, the Pirates went back to the passing game and Braden Lyssy connected with Antonio Cantu for 82 yards and a score. Lyssy and Garza hooked back up for the 2-point conversion, and the score was quickly 15-0.

Following a quick stop to the Mustangs’ offensive efforts, the Pirates took control of the ball and scored their third passing touchdown of the game. This time, the Poth score was courtesy of a 34-yard strike from Braden Lyssy to Garza. Lyssy added the extra point, and the Pirates carried a 22-0 lead into the second quarter.

The Pirate scoring bonanza continued into the second quarter, as Braden Lyssy connected with Zach Lyssy for a 56-yard touchdown. Braden then hit Tyler Kallies for the 2-point conversion.

With 8:05 to play in the half, Braden Lyssy capped off yet another Pirate scoring drive with a 6-yard run from scrimmage into the end zone. Less than a minute later, Garza found lots of running room as he broke through the Mustang defense for 90 yards and a touchdown. With more than seven minutes still remaining in the first half, Poth led Nixon-Smiley 44-0.

The Homecoming crowd got a little something to cheer about in the closing minutes of the first half as the Mustangs drove deep into Pirate territory and capped off their drive with a 1-yard touchdown run from VanAuken. Hernandez kicked the extra point, and the score stood at 44-7, with 2:53 left on the clock.

Unfortunately for Nixon-Smiley, that was nearly two minutes too much, as the Pirates scored again, on a 3-yard dive from Garza. Braden Lyssy kicked the extra point, and the Pirates enjoyed a 51-7 halftime lead.

The second half was less exciting, as neither team scored throughout the third quarter and most of the fourth. Hernandez was able to score on the Mustangs’ final drive of the game, though, as he ran in from 3 yards out. He kicked the extra point, and the final score stood at 51-14.

While the loss drops the Mustangs to 3-3 on the year and 1-1 in district play, the Pirates solidified their position atop the district. Poth remains unbeaten at 6-0, with a 2-0 district record.

Nixon-Smiley will travel to Three Rivers to face the Bulldogs this Friday, while the Pirates will play at home against the Dilley Wolves. Both games are scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
