Locals win big at coon hunt and show
Tony Rangel of Stockdale and Renegades Arial — overall show winner of the Lone Star Coonhunters Sept. 17 show
The Lone Star Coonhunters Association is an organization made up of hunting enthusiasts who enjoy the sound and friendship of a good dog. The members meet six to seven times per year in Wilson County and hold United Kennel Club (UKC) licensed bench shows and wild coonhunts in an effort to win prizes and championship points for the dogs.
It should be noted during these hunts no harm comes to the animals and dogs are rewarded with a simple pat on the head. Brad Cotton began attending these hunts in the late 1970s, and while our numbers are fewer, the club continues to go strong with friendship and camaraderie enjoyed by all.
The local association held its last event Sept. 17, during which the group gave belt buckles and trophies to the winners. This hunt and show was a little more special as it was the annual “Fall Classic” and the members also took time to remember a gentleman, Harry Shedrock, who passed this spring. Shedrock was a driving force in the sport for many years and took it upon himself to keep the club open and prospering.
The last bench show was well-attended with Renegades Arial named the overall show winner. Tony Rangel of Stockdale owns the treeing walker female.
The overall hunt winner was Wildwoods Tx. Treeslammin Trey, co-owned by Roger Childress of Nixon and Danny Cox of San Antonio, and handled by Cox.
A big thanks to those who came out to the show, as well as the local landowners who helped made this possible.
