KC Badgers topple Brahmas
Karnes City 28
KARNES CITY -- When the Stockdale Brahma football team looked over its schedule of 2011 opponents, several games stuck out. Among them was the team’s Oct. 7 date with Karnes City, and former Stockdale Head Coach Jim Wood. Unfortunately for the Brahmas, their old coach and the Badgers pulled out the win, 28-13.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Brahmas lit up the scoreboard first as senior quarterback Colton West connected with Cody Hastings for 51 yards and a touchdown. The extra point was good, and Stockdale led 7-0 with 5:47 to play in the half.
Karnes City came right back down the field though, and the Badgers put their first points on the board with a mere 20 seconds remaining until halftime. The touchdown came as Derrick Williams connected on a 12-yard passing play to Kenneth Glenn. The point-after kick was good, and the teams went into halftime all tied up at 7-7.
Karnes City took its first lead of the game at the 9:13 mark of the third quarter as Kevon Shelton found running room and rumbled 31 yards for a Badger touchdown. The kick to follow was good, and the score was 14-7.
During the first minute of the fourth quarter, Stockdale’s Matt Valadez shocked the Badger defense as he found an opening and sprinted 69 yards for a touchdown. The point-after attempt was no good, and the Brahmas trailed 14-13.
At about the midpoint of the fourth quarter, Shelton scored his second touchdown of the game on a 9-yard run from scrimmage. He went on to complete the hat trick, scoring his third touchdown of the game on a 43-yard run to seal the win for the Badgers. A pair of extra points made the final score 28-13.
Despite the loss, the Brahmas played well throughout most of the game. West connected on five of 14 passing attempts for 104 yards and a touchdown. He also threw one interception. Hastings had three grabs for 75 yards and a touchdown, Trevor Baumann caught two passes for 23 yards, and Valadez reeled in one toss for 6 yards.
On the ground, Valadez led Stockdale with 109 yards on nine carries, followed by Trevor Baumann with 46 yards on 12 carries, and West with eight carries for 14 yards.
The loss drops the Brahmas to 3-4 on the year, and the team is now 1-2 in district play. Stockdale will host Brooks Academy this Friday, Oct. 14. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Bobby Russell Field.
