Nixon-Smiley 12
Three Rivers 27

THREE RIVERS -- The Mustangs gave it a good effort against the Bulldogs of Three Rivers last Friday night, but couldn’t generate the offense needed for a win, falling by the score of 27-12.

Most of the first quarter passed without a score, but the Bulldogs eventually found the end zone with 1:44 left on the clock, as Troy Chowns ran in from 8 yards out. Chowns scored again midway through the second quarter, this time on a big 73-yard run from scrimmage. With a pair of extra points, Three Rivers led Nixon-Smiley, 14-0.

With less than a minute to play in the half, Chowns scored his third touchdown of the night on a 6-yard run. The extra point was no good, but it gave Three Rivers a 20-0 advantage with just 50 seconds remaining in the half.

The Mustangs weren’t left with much time on the clock, but got down the field in a hurry, and scored on an 8-yard passing play from Jaime Moreno to Garrett Earlywine. The point-after was no good, but the lead was cut to 20-6 at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Chance Saenz and Three Rivers scored another touchdown with a 1-yard run. With less than 11 minutes to play in the game, Three Rivers led Nixon-Smiley, 27-6.

The Mustangs picked up another score rather quickly, as Moreno connected with Keith Lamza for a 54-yard scoring strike with 8:38 to play in the game. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, and the score stood at 27-12. While the Mustangs tried everything to get back into the game, the Bulldog defense proved too strong, and Nixon-Smiley went home with its second district loss of the year.

On offense, Moreno completed six of 12 passes for 107 yards and two touchdowns for the Mustangs. He was picked off once. Lamza had one grab for 54 yards and a touchdown, and Earlywine had three receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown. Damian Perez had a catch for 19 yards, and Miguel Hernandez also caught a pass for 9 yards.

The Mustang ground game fell a little short of its typical numbers. Alex Hernandez led the way as he ran 12 times for 73 yards. Jared VanAuken had eight carries for 20 yards, and Moreno earned 19 yards on three carries.

Alex Hernandez also led the team on defense, as he accounted for 10 solo tackles and 13 assists. Rudy Acevedo had 7 solo tackles, Logan McMain had 4, and Robbie Mejia did the same. Dylan Robinson tallied one sack against Three Rivers to go along with 3 solo tackles and 10 assists.

The loss drops the Mustangs to 3-4 on the year, and the team is now 1-2 in district play. Nixon-Smiley will host Karnes City this Friday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
