Floresville 7
Gregory-Portland 17

PORTLAND -- After a 3-2 start to their season, the Floresville Tigers hit the road, traveling south for their first district game of the year. Unfortunately, the Tigers returned home with a 17-7 loss.

Midway through the first quarter, the Wildcats got onto the scoreboard with a 14-yard run by Devin Bisby. Armando Gutierrez kicked the extra point, and Gregory-Portland led 7-0. The Wildcats then added to their lead early in the second quarter, as Gutierrez booted a 28-yard field goal with 11:17 to play in the half. Floresville was unable to answer either score, and the teams went to the locker rooms with the Wildcats leading the Tigers 10-0.

Floresville scored its lone touchdown of the game early in the third quarter, as sophomore running back Hector Villegas capped off a Tiger drive with a 10-yard run from scrimmage. Estevan Mireles kicked the extra point, and Floresville trailed by a field goal.

The Wildcats made it a two-possession game again as they scored their second touchdown of the night early in the fourth quarter. Ryan Starcher got the nod for Gregory-Portland and took the ball 7 yards into the end zone. Gutierrez added the extra point, and the lead was back to 10, at 17-7. Floresville fought hard, but the Wildcat defense proved too much for the Tigers.

Floresville quarterback Colby Shodrock completed just six of 20 passing attempts for 23 yards, and was picked off once. Dominique DeWalt caught five passes for 18 yards, and Jacob Flores caught one for 5 yards.

Hector Villegas ran the ball 36 times against the Wildcats, picking up 122 total yards and a touchdown. Deron Taylor had one carry for 9 yards, Tyler Snyder had a carry for 5 yards, and Shodrock ended the night with negative yardage due to the pressure he faced from the Gregory-Portland defense.

The loss drops Floresville to 3-3 on the year, and the team is 0-1 to begin District 30-4A competition. The Tigers will play at home this Friday, Oct. 14, as they host the Victoria West Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Eschenburg Field.
