LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Bear varsity football team pulled off another win Oct. 7 against the Yoakum Bulldogs. The Bears ended the game with a 14-9 score to put them at 2 wins and 4 losses for the season, and 1-1 in district play.

The Bears and the Bulldogs both started off slow in the first quarter with neither team able to make it into the end zone. The first touchdown of the night came for the Bears during the second quarter with an 11-yard run from Vince Gill for 6 points. Alec Dews kicked the extra point and gave the Bears a 7-0 lead.

The Bulldogs were unable to make 6, but kicked a field goal for 3 points at the end of the second quarter, bringing the score to 7-3 at halftime.

Toward the end of the third quarter, La Vernia’s Aaron Grubb wowed the crowd with a 78-yard touchdown run that pulled the Bears even farther ahead. Dews did what he does best, and scored the extra point for La Vernia to take their lead up to 14-3.

Yoakum was finally able to score a touchdown with only 23 seconds left in the fourth quarter. However, it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Bears, and with no time left, La Vernia came out on top with 14-9 on the scoreboard.

La Vernia had a total of 302 yards during the game, compared to Yoakum’s 240. Gill completed 9 of his 13 pass attempts for a total of 77 yards.

Gill also led the team in rushing with 112 yards. Grubb ran for 81 yards, and Landon Richter earned 32.

Grubb caught four passes for the Bears for a total of 35 yards, while Kenny Moehrig caught two for a total of 29 yards. Michael Nuernberg caught two passes for 10 yards, and Mykal Joyce pulled in a 3-yard pass.

The Bears will travel to Poteet to throw down against the Aggies this Friday, Oct. 14. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
