Three local youth from Wilson County traveled to Dallas to compete at the 2011 Texas State Fair Llama Show. Darby Jones, Tanner White, and Anna Reese, all members of the local Freedom Riders 4-H Club, belong to the Llama Project, advised by Susan Leslie of Leslie Lane Llamas.

Darby Jones and Tanner White have been working with and showing llamas for less than one year. Tanner has already earned two grand champion buckles.

Darby, 15, is a freshman at Stockdale High School. In Darby’s third show, she and her llama, Mary, placed first in intermediate youth llama judging, and second in intermediate youth pack. The duo also took home three third-place honors -- intermediate youth showmanship, intermediate youth obstacle, and intermediate youth public relations.

Darby would like to thank her many generous sponsors that helped with her entry fees and show expenses -- ICP Industries, Average Joe’s Restorations, Leslie Lane Llamas, A-1 Scale, Texas Cooler, Janicek Insurance, The Image Gallery, Margaret Crews - Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant, and Cathy Lampert.

Tanner of La Vernia and his llama, Storm, placed first in four categories -- junior llama judging, junior youth pack, junior youth showmanship, and junior youth public relations. Tanner also placed second in the junior youth obstacle competition. Climaxing the event for Tanner, he took home the grand champion banner and a belt buckle for having the combined high point total in his performance classes -- pack, obstacle, and public relations.

Anna, a 2011 graduate of La Vernia High School, earned three grand champion titles, and one reserve grand.Anna and her llama, Forest, took grand champion performance in the senior youth division, for having the combined high point total in all performance classes -- pack, obstacle, and public relations. The second grand champion was in the heavy wool female halter division with her llama, Flora. The third grand was with her llama, Jake, who took the grand in novice performance, and the reserve went to Naomi and Anna in novice performance as well.

As a team, Darby, Tanner, and Anna’s combined scores secured the premier exhibitor award for Leslie Lane Llamas. This award is given out at each show to the farm/exhibitor that accumulates the highest number of points through their placings at the show.

Llama Project

Members of the Llama Project meet the first Saturday of every month for a group learning session and work individually with their llamas on a weekly basis. Saturday, Oct. 8, was the first group meeting of the year. If you know a local youth that would like to become involved with 4-H or the llama program, call Leslie at 830-401-0819.
