In response to the community’s desire to help those affected by the wildfires in Bastrop, the Floresville Independent School District (ISD) held a community-wide donation drive to collect goods and money.

On Sept. 26, district Superintendent Jerry Hunkapiller, Social Worker Ben Reed, Choices Counselor Ken McClendon, Floresville Middle School Counselor Suzie Martinez, and Student Transportation Operations Supervisor Beaver Wallace took a group of students representing each of the district’s campuses to Bastrop to personally deliver the donations, which included approximately $4,000, plus goods valued at an additional several thousand dollars.

Students participating in the delivery included Tyler Beigler, Robin Chavez, Kyndal Bippert, Garrett Pollok, Albert Saenz, Katy Smith, Karson Moeller, Natalie Adams, Lee Fisher, Julio Gill, David Finegan, Amanda Sendejo, and Daniel Luther.

The Bastrop ISD superintendent said the items were greatly appreciated. Mr. Murray told the Floresville group that prior to the fire, the district had 250 homeless students. That number has now grown to 850. He said that while many residents had already received clothing donations, many still needed the basic supplies Floresville ISD collected, such as laundry detergent, bedding, and paper goods.
