att Kenseth held off Kyle Busch in the closing laps of the Bank of America 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night to take the win. Busch finished second, and Carl Edwards was third.

Kenseth’s win was the first for Ford at Charlotte since 2002.

“It was an awesome win for us,” Kenseth said. “We had a pretty decent car all night.”

Tony Stewart started on the pole and was joined by Greg Biffle up front in the early laps. The two drivers ran up front for about the first third of the race until Biffle’s crew missed a lug nut during a green flag pit stop around lap 125, forcing Biffle to come back down pit road. Biffle fell off the led lap, and Stewart was joined up front by Kenseth and Busch.

Busch found himself in the lead after a cycle of green flag pit stops just before lap 200 of the 334-lap race. Stewart fell back through the field in the late going, as the yellow flag didn’t wave in his favor. On a couple of occasions late in the race, Stewart pitted under green, only to see the caution come out, catching him back around mid-pack. He ended up finishing eighth.

One of those cautions came out with 35 laps to go, when Biffle made contact with the wall awhile after getting back on the lead lap and gradually making his way back up toward the front.

Kenseth took the lead from Busch with about 25 laps to go and maintained the top spot through a caution that came out with 18 laps remaining when Jimmie Johnson hit the wall hard.

“That one stung for sure,” Johnson said. “Grateful to have safe racecars and safe walls.”

Johnson wound up finishing 34th.

When the race went back to green, Busch battled Kenseth for the lead, but was unable to get by. Kasey Kahne finished in the fourth spot, and Marcos Ambrose rounded out the top-five.

“I felt like we had a car that probably the last 150 laps or so that if we could get it to the front, it would be hard to beat, but it was just really hard to pass tonight, especially if you had about 20 laps on your tires,” Kenseth said.

With the win, Kenseth moved up two spots to third in the championship points standings, seven points behind leader, Edwards. Kevin Harvick remained in second, five points behind Edwards.
