LA VERNIA -- When the Town East Eagles welcomed the team from Fredericksburg Heritage last Friday night, they were hoping to pull an upset over the state-ranked team. Unfortunately, Heritage was too much for Town East, and returned home with a 70-40 win.

Heritage scored first in the game on a 53-yard passing play, but Town East came right back with a touchdown pass of its own. Ben Guerra connected with Drevion Johnson for 47 yards and the score. A missed extra-point attempt left Heritage with the lead.

Heritage scored on a short running play with just under two minutes to play in the first, and Town East responded with a 7-yard touchdown toss from Dante Johnson to Marcos Melcher. Heritage then broke loose on a 65-yard touchdown run to make it a 24-14 game after one quarter of play.

Guerra hit DeLa Antunes for 23 yards and a touchdown to start the second-quarter scoring efforts, and Heritage responded with a 13-yard touchdown of its own. Dante Johnson then connected with John LaMoy for 7 yards and Town East’s fourth touchdown of the half. With less than a minute before halftime, Heritage scored its fifth touchdown of the game on a 13-yard toss and catch. As the teams took a breather for halftime, it was Heritage on top, 40-28.

Heritage added to its lead early in the third quarter on a 35-yard touchdown run. The Eagles came back strong, though, and scored their first touchdown of the second half on a 1-yard run by Dante Johnson. Heritage returned the ensuing kickoff for 75 yards and a touchdown, and held a commanding 54-34 lead. The Eagles weren’t finished in the third, though, and scored on a 1-yard run from LaMoy with six seconds remaining in the third to make it 54-40.

Sadly, the touchdown in the final seconds of the third did prove to be the last points for Town East. Heritage, meanwhile, went on to add two more touchdowns on an 18-yard run and a 57-yard passing play. When time expired in the game, it was Heritage with the big win, 70-40.

Statistically, Town East matched the play of Heritage. The Eagles totaled 474 yards, while Heritage tallied 446. Town East earned nine first downs, while Heritage picked up 12. Each team punted the ball twice. The biggest difference was in turnovers. While Town East fumbled and lost the ball three times, Heritage didn’t cough it up once.

Guerra completed 10 of 18 passing attempts for 222 yards, and Dante Johnson completed 4 of 5 passes for 18 yards. LaMoy was the Eagles’ leading receiver with 96 yards, followed by Drevion Johnson with 47 yards and Dante Johnson with 31. Guerra caught one pass for 4 yards.

Guerra ran the ball 18 times for another 222 yards, and Dante Johnson ran the ball four times for 14 yards.

The loss drops the Eagles to 5-3 on the year, and the team is now 3-2 in district play. Town East has a bye this week, but will return to action Friday, Oct. 28, as the Eagles host Waco Parkview. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wiseman Field in La Vernia.
