La Vernia 36

Poteet 7

POTEET -- After scoring 22 points in the first quarter, the La Vernia Bear football team cruised to victory over the Aggies last Friday evening in Poteet. La Vernia only allowed one score in the fourth quarter, and went home with a 36-7 win.

The Bears got things going on their opening drive of the game as Landon Richter scored on a run from 27 yards out. Alec Dews kicked the extra point, and La Vernia led 7-0 with 10:14 to play in the game. After a couple of exchanges back and forth, the Bears added to their lead with the outstanding defensive efforts of Aaron Grubb. Grubb picked off an Aggie pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. He then ran in the 2-point conversion, and the Bears led 15-0.

La Vernia continued to add to its lead in the closing minutes of the first quarter, as quarterback Vince Gill found Grubb open for 9 yards and a score. Dews kicked the extra point, and the Bears took a healthy 22-0 lead into the second quarter of play.

With 3:19 remaining in the first half, the Bears scored their fourth touchdown of the game on a 31-yard pass from Gill to Josh Rutledge. Dews booted the extra point, and the Bears walked into halftime with a 29-0 lead.

The Bears scored their final touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter as David Brewton found running room from 11 yards out. Dews kicked the extra point, and the lead was 36-0.

The Aggies finally got on the scoreboard with 2:20 to play in the game, as Kris Guzman capped off a Poteet drive with a 1-yard touchdown run from scrimmage. Niko Hernandez kicked the extra point. When regulation expired, though, it was La Vernia with the win.

While the Bear offense stayed busy putting up solid numbers, the defense did the same. La Vernia’s defense held Poteet to 175 total yards, and allowed just seven first downs throughout the contest. The Aggie runners were held to less than 4 yards per carry on the night, and completed just 20 percent of their passes. The tough Bear defense forced Poteet to punt the ball five times, and La Vernia forced and recovered two Aggie fumbles.

Richter ran for 111 yards on 11 carries for La Vernia. Gill had 36 yards of rushing offense, Brewton and Errol Warren each ran for 16 yards, and Colby Simms carried the ball three times for 11 yards. Rutledge caught four passes for 44 yards, Grubb caught two for 21 yards, and Levi Andrews caught two passes for 20 yards. Kenny Moehrig also had a catch for 10 yards.

The win moves La Vernia to 3-4 on the year, and the Bears are now 2-1 in district play, which keeps them in the hunt for a spot in the playoffs. The Bears will host the high-powered offense of Sam Houston this Friday, Oct. 21, at Bear Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
