Benavides 6

Falls City 54

Wilson County News

FALLS CITY -- The defending state champs from Falls City continued their domination of District 16-1A opponents last Friday night, as the Beavers tore up the Benavides Eagles by the score of 54-6.

Falls City needed just over a minute to score its first touchdown of the game, as Tyler Wiatrek capped off a quick Beaver drive with a 6-yard run into the end zone. Cody Jendrusch scored Falls City’s second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run, and Wiatrek went in for a second time from 15 yards out to help make it a 21-0 contest.

Special teams gave the ball right back to Falls City, and Wiatrek ran in from 2 yards out to make it a 27-0 game with 2:58 still remaining in the first quarter. Phillip Lyssy decided to get in on the scoring action and ran in from 12 yards out. When the first quarter came to a close, it was Falls City with a commanding 34-0 advantage.

At the 8:49 mark of the second quarter, Jendrusch ran in for his second touchdown of the game, this time from 4 yards out. The Beaver passing game did a little work in the first half, too, and quarterback Cameron Soto connected with Wade Jimerson for 30 yards and a touchdown. As the teams went into halftime, it was Falls City 47, Benavides 0.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, things didn’t improve much in the second half. Austen Camber took the opening kickoff for Falls City and returned it 94 yards for the Beavers’ eighth touchdown of the game, making the score 54-0.

Falls City backed off from there, though the team kept the Eagles at bay. Benavides did manage to score early in the fourth quarter, but it hardly made a difference, as the champs cruised to a 54-6 win.

The Beavers dominated the Eagles on both sides of the ball all night. Falls City ran the ball 31 times for 316 yards, and completed three of four passes for 41 yards. Wiatrek led the ground game with 105 yards on six carries, followed by Lyssy with 66 yards on six carries. Soto ran the ball four times for 45 yards, Kendall Kanak ran for 31 yards, Jendrusch had 30, and David Brodsky was good for another 26. Jon Swierc ran once for 11 yards, and Dean Gaskamp had a carry for 2 yards. Jimerson caught one pass for 30 yards and a touchdown, and Stephen Poole caught two passes for 11 yards.

On defense, the Beavers held the Eagles to less than 100 total yards. Benavides ran the ball 35 times for just 93 yards, and threw the ball three times for three incompletions. The Falls City defense allowed just eight first downs for the Eagles, and forced them to punt the ball three times.

The win puts the Beavers at 6-2 on the year, and 4-0 in district play. The team will travel to Agua Dulce this Friday, Oct. 21, to face the Longhorns. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
