South Texas Cowboys, numbering more than 250 teams, battled the weather and turned out Oct. 8 to participate in the Floresville Peanut Festival Team Roping. The event was held in the Floresville River Park Arena, located west of Floresville.

High-point money, Crossroads belt buckles, and Crossroads spurs were awarded in the No. 8, No. 10, and No. 12 roping events.

The high-point winner of the day was Bradley Danz, who was awarded $600.

Chase Hennig and Jimmy Ruiz led the way in the No. 8 roping, and were awarded Crossroads belt buckles. Cooter Coronado and Bradley Danz took second place, winning Crossroads spurs for their effort. Finishing third were Adam Walpole and Starley Higgins.

Ruiz returned to the winners’ circle, teamed with Chris Rocha to win first in the No. 10, earning Crossroads belt buckles. Ruiz teamed with Brian Calhoun to place second, while Bradley Danz and Shelly Granzin finished in third place.

No. 12 winners were Chris Rocha and Gary Sutton. Winning second place in the average were Shelly Granzin and Joe Bob Guerrero.

Ranch rodeo

With even worse weather conditions on Oct. 9, four ranch rodeo teams and three mutton busters showed up in the pouring rain ready to play in the mud.

Crossroads belt buckles, donated by HMC Construction of Boerne, J.A.M. Automotive in Floresville, and Las Lagunas Restaurant in Floresville, were awarded to Bar J, the average winners of the ranch rodeo.

Bar J’s team members included C.J. Lewis, Blake Horny, Derek Hale, and Sherman Kitchens. The team had the fastest time in the mugging, trailer loading, and doctoring events.

The team of Young Guns -- C.J. Lewis, Cody Tieken, Elliott Renshaw, and Blake Horny -- won the fastest time in the branding contest.

Other teams included the Rough Riders -- Starley Higgins, Adam Walpole, Lucas Barfield, and Anthony Barfield; and the Bottom Busters -- Alex Garza, Matt Aguirre, J.D. Folbre, and Richard Arredondo.

The mutton bustin’ riders got down and dirty to ride three ranked sheep. Kash Loyd, Xander Hix, and Colton McInvale were not scared of a little mud. Xander prevailed with the high score of 95 to win the Crossroads Buckles Top Hand buckle, donated by Jack’s Café in Floresville. All riders received trophies donated by Richardson Chevrolet in Floresville. Chesnutt Arena in Kenedy provided the mutton bustin’ chute used for the contest.

The two-day event was produced by Short Round Productions, with cattle provided by Jaime Macias.
