The Mayor and City Council have once again ignored the will of the people and voted to push ahead with the VIA plan that includes trolleys and rails, and that puts San Antonio into greater debt. They refuse to place it on a vote before the people as was done in 2000 when it was voted down 3-1.
When will this style of governing end? How long must we endure elected officials who act according to their liberal whims and ignore the majority of the people? Last month the City passed a “benefits for domestic partners” in spite of an overwhelming majority that spoke out against it.
Again this time, more people spoke against the VIA plan than in support, and it passed 8-1. What do we need to do to stop this runaway train of liberal governance, of tax and spend, of ignoring the will of the governed?
The Mayor and Council are liberals who see themselves as “agents of change”, and who will do “what is best for the community” regardless of whether the majority agrees or disagrees. They feel they know what’s best for everyone, and individual rights are secondary to collective needs. The problem is that liberals determine what the collective needs are, such as abortion clinics, benefits for domestic partners, mass transportation projects, and eminent domain.
Our neighbors in surrounding communities and counties should also worry about the SA and Bexar County officials, because they will be affected also, either directly or indirectly.
What can the citizens do to stop this imposition of governmental rule without the consent of the governed? We should be very concerned about a Mayor, City Council, and County Judge and Commissioners’ Court that does not listen to the majority of the citizens.
It has been said that if the City and County ignores us, we will go away, and that seems to be their strategy. However, we must send a message to these local elected officials, the same way that the people sent a message to Nancy Pelosi and the U.S. House last year.
1. We should show our presence at City Hall and the County Commission all the time, on all issues. We must be seen and heard as much as possible.
2. Lobby the Council members and County Commissioners constantly, particularly the liberals.
3. Consider a recall of the Mayor. We can send a message to the rest by challenging him directly.
