The city of La Vernia will hold a Special Election on Nov. 8 for the reauthorization of local sales and use tax in the city of La Vernia at the rate of one-fourth of 1 percent to continue providing revenue for maintenance and repair of municipal streets.

A 1-cent local sales-tax increase was approved by the voters in La Vernia in November 2007 with a half-cent dedicated for economic development, 1/4-cent for property-tax reduction, and 1/4-cent dedicated for maintenance and repair of city streets. The portion dedicated for street repair and maintenance must be re-authorized per state law by election every four years.

This is not a new tax. This quarter cent has been collected for four years and is dedicated solely for the repair and maintenance of streets in the city limits of La Vernia. The collection of this tax allows the city to free up other revenue in the general fund without having to budget additional monies for street repair and maintenance. It also creates the opportunity for people who shop, worship, and attend school in La Vernia, but live outside the city limits, to contribute to the repair and maintenance of the city streets they use daily.

Early voting is being held in the La Vernia City Hall.

Early voting continues through Friday, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Voting Nov. 1-2 will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The polls will be open at the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department on U.S. 87 on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Please vote.
HAROLD SCHOTT
Mayor, La Vernia

Question: Has anyone seen a government body that could tax but didn't? Originally a portion of the city tax went for the street maintenance, just as the general city tax used to cover things like sewer and garbage pickup. These ... More ›

William J. Gibbs Jr.: You missed the point. Let's stop taxing everyone to death. Vote to stop the tax. The maintenance and repair is not worth the added tax. Have you seen the roads and streets in La Vernia? I bet the ... More ›

7th Generation: State law (Chapter 327 of the Tax Code) allows municipalities to levy a tax for streets maintenance and repair, provided the voters approve the new tax. Once the tax is in place, the law also requires that ... More ›

Not a new tax, so that is going to make it what? Where is the Tea Party movement in La Vernia? This would be a great target for the movement, but again, no where to be found.

What a concept. Spending money where it is allocated to be spent.
