Tiger running game not enough to get win
Beeville Jones 32
BEEVILLE -- While Floresville sophomore running back Hector Villegas ran the ball for 214 yards to put himself at an even 1,400 yards on the year, it wasn’t enough offense for the Tigers to get past the Beeville Jones Trojans. Floresville fell to Beeville, 32-13.
The first touchdown of the game came midway through the first quarter of play as Beeville’s Frankie Gutierrez ran in from 2 yards out. The point-after attempt was no good, but the Trojans held the early lead, 6-0. The home team then scored its second touchdown of the game at the 7:30 mark of the second quarter as Gutierrez sprang one loose from the Trojans’ own 18-yard line. After an 82-yard sprint, the score was 12-0 in favor of Beeville.
After halftime, the Floresville offense found the end zone as Villegas capped off a Tiger drive with a 7-yard touchdown run. Esteban Mireles kicked the extra point, and the Tigers were back in the game, now trailing 12-7.
A good Tiger defensive stand put the ball back in the hands of its offense, but a fumble back in Floresville territory led to a Gutierrez recovery and return for a touchdown. A failed 2-point conversion attempt by Beeville left the score at 18-7 in favor of the Trojans.
Gutierrez, who ran for 211 yards of his own, racked up his fourth touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter, as he exploited a hole in the Tiger defense and rumbled 69 yards for a touchdown. Beeville kicked the extra point, and enjoyed a 25-7 lead.
The Tigers weren’t done fighting, though, and Floresville thundered down the field deep into Beeville territory. Villegas then ran for his second touchdown of the game, leaving the score at 25-13.
The Trojans scored the final touchdown of the game with just 42 ticks remaining on the clock. Eric Rosales did the honors for Beeville, running in from 20 yards out. The extra point was good, and the game ended with a Trojan victory by the final score of 32-13.
Villegas continued to serve as the Floresville workhorse, running the ball a whopping 40 times for 214 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Tiger quarterback Colby Shodrock recorded the only other Floresville run from scrimmage, as he picked up 1 yard on one carry.
Shodrock went to the air 17 times, completing five passes for 83 yards. He was picked off twice. Jacob Flores was the Tigers’ leading receiver with three catches for 53 yards, followed by Dominique DeWalt with two catches for 30 yards.
The loss drops the Tigers to 4-4 on the year and 1-2 in District 30-4A competition. Floresville has just two games remaining, and must pick up at least one win if they hope to make the playoffs. The Tigers will be in Victoria this Friday, Oct. 28, to face the Victoria East Titans. The game is being seen as a “must-win” for the Tigers. The Titans are currently in a tie with Beeville for second and third place in the district, with Floresville and Gregory-Portland tied for the fourth and final playoff spot. Gregory-Portland did beat Floresville earlier this year, however.
Kickoff in Victoria is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
