Mustangs run over Bengals for 54-8 win
Brooks Academy 8
NIXON -- After a big win over Brooks Academy, the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs took another step toward the playoffs last Friday night. The Mustang offense kept the ball on the ground, and pounded its way to a 54-0 victory.
Jared VanAuken starting things off by putting the Mustangs on the board with a thrilling 47-yard run midway through the first quarter. The extra point was no good, but Nixon-Smiley had the early lead.
On the Bengals’ next possession, the Mustang defense came up with one of its two interceptions, as Robby Mejia snatched down the Bengal pass and returned it 26 yards for another Mustang touchdown. After the Alex Hernandez run for the 2-point conversion, Nixon-Smiley led 14-0.
Scoring a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter was nice, but it wasn’t enough for the Mustangs. With just over a minute still remaining in the first, Miguel Hernandez found running room from the Bengal 38-yard line and sprinted in for 6 points. As the teams moved into the second quarter, it was Nixon-Smiley in control, 20-0.
The Mustang defense held the Bengals on their next possession, and the ball quickly went back to Nixon-Smiley. The Mustang offense wasted little time moving down toward the goal line, and Alex Hernandez ran in the team’s fourth touchdown of the game with 9:04 to play in the half.
Mustang quarterback Jaime Moreno was fairly quiet throughout the game, but made a little noise of his own as he scored on a 9-yard run with 6:36 to play in the half. Alex Hernandez then kicked the extra point to make the score 33-0.
The Mustangs added a bit more pressure on Brooks when Miguel Hernandez scored his second touchdown of the game on a 33-yard run from scrimmage. Alex Hernandez kicked the extra point, and Nixon-Smiley went into halftime with an impressive 40-0 advantage.
The Mustangs made big substitutions in the second half, but the Bengals were still unable to stop the Nixon-Smiley running game. Matt Finch scored the first of two second-half touchdowns just a minute into the second half. He found running room through the Bengal defense and scampered 69 yards for the score. He went on to score again at the 5:46 mark of the third quarter, this time from 30 yards out. Alex Hernandez kicked both extra points, and the Mustangs enjoyed a 54-0 lead until late in the fourth.
With just over four minutes remaining in the game, Brooks Academy finally scored on a short 10-yard passing play. The 2-point conversion was also good, and the final score stood at 54-8.
The Mustang offense didn’t throw a single pass all night, opting to keep the ball on the ground. Nixon-Smiley ran the ball a total of 38 times for 390 yards. VanAuken led all rushers with 104 yards on 13 carries, followed by Finch with 99 yards on two carries. Miguel Hernandez racked up 71 yards on four carries, Alex Hernandez had 66 yards on 15 carries, and Moreno ran three times for 41 yards. Victor Coronado had one carry for 9 yards.
The Mustang defense held the Bengals to just 148 total yards. Brooks ran the ball 30 times for just 76 yards, and completed 6 of 21 passing attempts for another 72 yards. The Mustang defense picked off two Bengal passes for interceptions.
The big win leaves the Mustangs at 5-4 on the season and 3-2 in district play. Nixon-Smiley will wrap up its regular season at home this Friday, Oct. 28, as they host the Stockdale Brahmas. With a win, the Mustangs could propel themselves into the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
