With final district games taking place this week, the 2011 high school volleyball playoff picture is coming into focus, and fans in the area won’t be surprised to hear that five of the six area teams are in the hunt.

In Class 5A, the East Central Lady Hornets have qualified for a shot at the postseason, and sit in third place behind Corpus Christi Carroll and Corpus Christi King. With Highlands still two games behind East Central as of press time, the Lady Hornets are a lock for the No. 3 seed out of 28-5A.

Over in Class 4A competition, the Floresville Jaguars showed promise under new Head Coach Reagan Curran, and locked up the No. 4 seed in District 30-4A. The Jaguars were holding their own at 4-5 in district play with one game left, and neither Beeville nor Gregory-Portland can leapfrog them in a single game.

The La Vernia Lady Bears have been a regional powerhouse every year under Head Coach Theresa Reyes, and that fact hasn’t changed this year. The Lady Bears headed into their final regular season match with Cuero undefeated at 11-0 in district play. With Yoakum two games back, La Vernia had already locked up the District 28-3A title, and has a trip into the postseason as the No. 1 seed. The Lady Bears have the ability to win the region this year, and should be fun to watch in the playoffs.

When it comes to Class 2A volleyball, a conversation wouldn’t be complete without mention of the Poth Pirettes. The Pirettes have been on a tear once again this year, and tallied a 13-0 district record as of press time. George West looked good and was in second place by one game, as Karnes City locked up the third playoff spot for District 30-2A. The Pirettes remain the state’s No. 3-ranked team, and there is no reason to believe they won’t make another legitimate run at the state title.

The picture isn’t so clear in District 29-2A, however. With one game to play, the second- and third-place playoff spots were still up for grabs as of press time Monday afternoon. Marion locked up the district title with an unbeaten district run, but Nixon-Smiley, Randolph, and Luling were all tied at 7-4 with one game to play. The Lady Mustangs were scheduled to face Marion in their final game, while Randolph and Luling were set to play each other, with the winner of that game earning a trip to the postseason. If the Lady Mustangs can defeat Marion, they will be in. If they fall, it may come down to a playoff, as Nixon-Smiley split matches with Randolph, but fell twice to Luling.

The Stockdale Lady Brahmas also compete in District 29-2A, but will miss the playoffs this season. With a young team full of talent, though, they could be in the hunt next season.
