Pirates cage Bulldogs to remain undefeated
Junior running back Phillip Garza looks upfield for running room during the Poth Pirates’ Oct. 21 win over the Three Rivers Bulldogs.
THREE RIVERS -- After enjoying a bye the week prior, the Poth Pirate football team was back on the field last Friday night as the team traveled down to Three Rivers to face the Bulldogs. The Bulldog defense did a good job at containing the potent Pirate offense, but Poth found ways to score, and returned home with a 34-6 win, and a guaranteed slot in the playoffs.
The Pirates scored their first 6 points of the game on a great 46-yard run from quarterback Braden Lyssy. Zach Lyssy then connected with Trey Broyles on the 2-point conversion, and the Pirates had a lead they would never relinquish.
Poth added to its lead in the first quarter with two additional touchdowns. The Pirates’ second touchdown of the game came as Braden Lyssy hit Antonio Cantu for 44 yards and a touchdown. The third was a gift from the Poth special teams, as Broyles scooped up a blocked punt and returned it 24 yards for the score.
The Pirates were on top, but weren’t finished scoring, as Braden Lyssy ran in on a 1-yard keeper before halftime.
The Pirates were able to add one final touchdown in the fourth quarter, as Broyles made another big defensive play. As Three Rivers threatened to score against Poth, Broyles intercepted the Bulldog pass and ran it back 96 yards for a touchdown. With a pair of point-after kicks in the game from Braden Lyssy, the Pirates cruised to a 34-6 victory over Three Rivers.
Offensively, the Pirates tallied 264 yards of offense. The team ran the ball 21 times for 131 yards, and completed six passes for another 133 yards.
Braden Lyssy led the Poth ground game with eight carries for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Phillip Garza had 10 carries for 41 yards, and Tyler Kallies ran the ball once for 18. Zach Lyssy had two carries in the game for another 7 yards.
Through the air, Braden Lyssy completed 5 for 7 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. Zach Lyssy completed his one pass for 3 yards. Cantu led the Pirate receiving corps with 44 yards, followed by Kallies with 34, Garza with 22, and Zach Lyssy with 19. Broyles also had two catches for 14 yards and a 2-point conversion.
With the win, the Pirates improve to 8-0 on the year, and are 4-0 in district play. Poth will be at home this Friday, Oct. 28, against the Badgers of Karnes City. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Jack Lane Stadium.
