Beavers start slowly, but win big in Agua Dulce

AGUA DULCE -- When the Falls City Beavers traveled to Agua Dulce last Friday night, it wasn’t expected to be much of a game. The Longhorns may have had home-field advantage, but at 1-6 on the year, they were hardly prepared for the defending state champs. As expected, the Beavers returned home with a big 41-0 victory, but it wasn’t easy going for Falls City -- at least not in the first half.
Falls City didn’t get off to a quick start as it has done in so many games before. The Longhorn defense made plays when it had to, and the teams struggled to find a rhythm.
After nearly a complete first half without a score, Falls City’s David Brodsky broke the game’s stalemate, as he pulled down a Cameron Soto pass for 40 yards and 6 points. Scott Lyssy kicked the extra point, and with only 1:15 left to play in the half, the Beavers led the Longhorns, 7-0.
Following the halftime break, Tyler Wiatrek began the Beavers’ second-half scoring efforts with a 24-yard touchdown run from scrimmage. Phillip Lyssy then followed suit with an 8-yard touchdown run of his own. Scott Lyssy kicked one of the two extra points, and Falls City led the Longhorns 20-0 as the third quarter came to an end.
Early in the fourth quarter, Cody Jendrusch made it a 26-point game as he ran in from 10 yards out. Soto then hit Jon Swierc on the 2-point conversion, and the lead was 28-0. Soto went on to score the team’s fifth touchdown of the game on the Beavers’ next possession. He found running room from the Longhorn 30-yard line and ran in for the score. The point-after kick was no good, but the lead was 34-0, and the game was all but over.
Everything was going the Beavers’ way, but Falls City took nothing for granted and continued to play its brand of football. The Beavers drove down into Longhorn territory, and with just under five minutes to play, Swierc sprang loose on a 34-yard run for Falls City’s sixth and final touchdown of the game. Scott Lyssy kicked the extra point, and the Beaver faithful celebrated a 41-0 victory.
The Beaver defense played incredibly tough throughout the district contest, allowing the Longhorns just 86 total yards of offense. Agua Dulce actually punted for more yards (91) than they earned in offense. Falls City held the Longhorns to just 37 rushing yards on 33 attempts, and allowed only 6 of 17 completions, while picking off two passes.
Offensively, the Beavers kept their ground game rolling with 247 rushing yards on 35 carries. Phillip Lyssy had the bulk of the touches with 75 yards on 12 carries, followed by Soto with 59 yards on nine carries and Tyler Wiatrek with 54 yards on five carries. Jon Swierc ran four times for 41 yards, and Cody Jendrusch carried the ball five times for 18 yards.
In addition to the solid running game, the Beaver passing game was perfect, as Soto completed all five of his passing attempts for 120 yards and a touchdown. Brodsky caught two passes for 65 yards, Lyssy caught two for 31, and Jon Swierc reeled in one pass for 24 yards.
The Beavers, now 7-2 overall and 5-0 in district, will play their final regular season game this Friday, Oct. 28, as they host Bruni. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Beaver Stadium.
Falls City will enjoy a bye during the last week of the regular season, and will spend that time preparing for a playoff run and title defense.
