For five members of the East Central FFA, the month of October has brought the area rain and a flood of championship banners from the State Fair of Texas in Dallas.

Alexis Wagner began the reign of winners Oct. 6, by having her steer selected as the lightweight champion exotic steer. Alexis, a junior at East Central High School, is the daughter of Tommy and Tracy McGhee.

Lindsay Hamer and Cassidy Jordan, competing scientists and sisters, took their projects to the largest science fair in state fair history on Oct. 11. Lindsay and Cassidy are daughters of Bob and Lisa Jordan.

Lindsay, a sophomore at East Central High School, competed at the National AgriScience Fair in Indianapolis, Ind., in mid-October. Lindsay’s project was named reserve champion of the engineering division.

Cassidy, a junior at East Central High School, competed in the animal science division with her science fair project. Her project was named champion in the animal science division and grand champion overall, earning her a $5,000 scholarship.

Completing the list of champions was the sister duo of Kaitlyn Kempen and Kylie Patterson, the daughters of Danny and Lorie Kempen.

Kylie, an eighth-grader at Heritage Middle School, was named agribusiness junior champion speaker.

Kaitlyn, a fifth-grader at Oak Crest Middle School, was named junior champion Western Heritage speaker and reserve grand champion speaker of the largest public-speaking event in state fair history with more than 120 public speakers.
