Elline Frieda Lange Hummel
Elline Frieda Lange Hummel passed away Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011. She was born March 3, 1926, in Floresville, Texas, the third of six children born to Annie Henrietta Boehme and Felix Otto Lange Sr.
She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Floresville. She graduated from Floresville High School in 1942, and went to work at Kelly Air Force Base as a keypunch operator/data processor. While working in San Antonio, she met and married Malcolm Calvin Hummel on Jan. 11, 1948.
Their first daughter, Sheryl Yvonne, was born July 25, 1950. Elline became a stay-at-home mom. Their second daughter, Deborah Ann, was born May 28, 1955. In 1959, the government recalled Elline to Security Service/Electronic Security Command, where she worked Intelligence programs and became a computer programmer.
Malcolm died in October 1973. Elline retired from the government in July 1984 with 33 years of distinguished service. She worked for Jack Biegger at ERA for six years.
Elline moved to Floresville in June 1989, when her mom turned 92. She became involved with the high school reunion group and the Hermann Sons Lodge in Poth, where she served as secretary/treasurer. She was active at the First Lutheran Church with the prayer group, the church council, and the music club.
When she had her cardiac surgeries and stroke in 2007, this slowed her down a bit, but she was determined to learn how to walk again and she did. With the help of her caregivers, Alicia, Trudy, Michelle, Orelia, and others, Elline learned how to accomplish many things again.
She moved to Florida in 2009 to live near Deborah. She lived at The Atrium, a retirement center, where she enjoyed activities with her caregiver, Gabbie. Elline and Deborah moved to Colorado Springs this year to be near Sheryl. As her Alzheimer’s progressed, she moved into the Memory Care unit at Emeritas at Bear Creek, where she lived out her days.
Elline is survived by her daughters, Sheryl Hummel and Deborah Schrank; her sister, Margaret Lechner and husband Nick of Missoula, Mont.; and her grandsons, Geoff, Jonathan, and Joel Schrank.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m. in the First Lutheran Church in Floresville.
Interment will follow in the St. John’s Cemetery in San Antonio.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011; or the First Lutheran Church, 1406 Sixth St., Floresville, TX 78114.
