Hornets lock up District 28-5A
C.C. Carroll 3
East Central 45
EAST CENTRAL -- After playing a stellar first half of football last Friday night, the East Central Hornets took a big lead early over the Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers and never looked back. The Hornets maintained pressure throughout the game, and ended the night with a 45-3 victory, and sealed the deal on another District 28-5A title.
The Hornets got rolling early, and needed just over one minute to score their first touchdown of the game. Junior running back Chris Armstrong did the honors for East Central, as he ran into the end zone from 6 yards out. Blayne Sells kicked the extra point, and the lead was 7-0 with 10:54 still remaining in the first quarter of play.
The touchdown to start the game was just the beginning for East Central, though, and the Hornets went on to add three more scores in the first half of play. Lyle Howland reeled in a 13-yard pass from Latham Walleck to score with 3:16 left in the first quarter, and then Orlando Acevado scored on a 10-yard run from scrimmage early in the second. Sells kicked one of the two extra points, and East Central enjoyed a 20-0 advantage.
Midway through the second quarter, the Hornet defense put points on the board after pinning Carroll deep in its own territory. Carlos Mora picked off a Tiger passing attempt at the Carroll 10-yard line, and then took it to the house for another 6 points. Latham Walleck ran in the 2-point conversion on the following play, and the Hornets’ lead was 28.
With time winding down in the half, the Tigers finally got on the board at the one-minute mark when Drake Young kicked a short field goal. As the teams went into halftime, though, it was East Central in clear control, 28-3.
The second half didn’t start as quickly as the first had, but the Hornets found their way to the end zone about midway through the third quarter on a 28-yard sprint from Edwin Dearring. Sells added the point-after, and the East Central lead was back to 28.
The Hornets added to their lead less than four minutes later, when Christian Jones connected with David Martinez for 32 yards and a touchdown. Sells split the uprights once again, and the score was 42-3 in favor of East Central.
The final score of the game came in the final minute of the third quarter, as Sells showed off his leg one final time with a 41-yard field goal. The scoreboard rolled up to 45 points, and the contest was all but over.
The Tigers tried to get themselves back into the game, but the Hornet defense proved to be too much, and the game ended with the score at 45-3.
East Central’s defense shut down the Carroll running game, holding the Tigers to just 35 yards of rushing offense on 23 carries. The Tigers were able to pick up 164 yards through the air, but only after throwing the ball a whopping 35 times. The Hornet defense recovered two Tiger fumbles, and picked off two passes.
Armstrong led the Hornet offense with 113 yards rushing on 11 carries. Acevado ran 10 times for 85 yards, and Dearring added 48 yards on six carries. Walleck ran for 30 yards, Jeremy Jones ran for 29, and Carl Cleveland added 10 yards on two carries.
Walleck completed 2 of 5 passes for 10 yards and a touchdown, Christian Jones completed 2 of 4 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown, and Jeremy Jones completed 3 of 5 passes for 25 yards. David Martinez was the leading receiver on the night with one grab for 32 yards, Dustin Toscano pulled one in for 11 yards, and Kyle Padalecki caught a pass for 8 yards. Kyle Ramon, Vernest Dotson, and Brett Casey also had receptions in the game.
The win lifts the Hornets to 6-3 on the year, and the team remains unbeaten in District 28-5A play at 4-0. East Central will close out the regular season this Saturday, Nov. 5, against the Highlands Owls, and will then begin focusing on the playoffs. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Alamo Stadium.
