Tennis team earns trip to Regionals
Floresville High School Tiger and Jaguar tennis teams will compete at Regionals.
FLORESVILLE -- Nobody could have predicted the tough road the Floresville High School varsity tennis team would have to navigate the night of Oct. 20, as the team fought to clinch playoff wins against both Beeville and Port Lavaca. They endured a close win by defeating Beeville 10-8 in their first matchup, and were then able to handily defeat Port Lavaca 10-3 in their second matchup of the evening -- earning their way to regional play.
The Tigers and Jaguars were the favorites headed into the playoff series, but Beeville showed extreme tenacity in winning critical matches that almost derailed Floresville’s chances of advancing to regional play. In the 17th match of play, Floresville was able to clinch the overall win by reaching 10 match wins first. In team tennis, there are a total of 19 matches played by the two teams, and the team reaching 10 wins first wins the matchup. During the entire contest, wins between Floresville and Beeville fluctuated throughout the evening until Floresville was ahead 9-8, and won the deciding 10th match.
“The players really wanted to win and felt a lot of pressure during their Beeville matchup, but a lot of credit has to be given to Beeville for playing aggressively and like they had nothing to lose,” said Floresville Head Tennis Coach Mario Martinez. “Fortunately, we were able to win the right matches and the players really supported and encouraged one another throughout the matches. Once we were able to defeat Beeville, the kids really relaxed and easily defeated Port Lavaca in their final matchup of the evening.”
Next, the team played Port Lavaca, which had earned a bye into the playoffs. As both teams played one another into the first set of their matches, however, the lights at the Victoria West tennis facility suddenly went out.
“The lights at the tennis facility unexpectedly turned off as we were playing our final matchup against Port Lavaca, and play was suspended for about 25 minutes before they were turned back on,” Martinez said. “Believe it or not, the lights turning off seemed to liven and relax the players, because when the lights were turned back on, we were able to win our matches easier.”
The Floresville varsity tennis team had been doing well all season long, earning a 12-5 record on the year. The players began their pre-season the first week of August, playing in 100-degree weather and enduring countless hours of drills in preparation for their season. Still, they fell short of achieving a team tennis goal of becoming district champions, when Gregory-Portland defeated Floresville 15-4 in district play.
Next up for the tennis team is regional play and the Tigers and Jaguars are hoping to improve upon last year’s ninth-place standing.
“We’ve never gotten into the main draw of the bracket at Regionals because the top sixteen teams in the region are extremely tough to beat, but the team is ready to play whoever in the first round, and try to create an upset,” Martinez said.
After regional play, the varsity tennis team will begin their training for the spring season, which begins in January and culminates with a district tournament in April.
