Beavers end regular season with convincing win over Bruni
After reeling in a pass from quarterback Cameron Soto, Wade Jimerson (12) streaks down the field for the Beavers’ first touchdown of the night against Bruni.
Falls City 49
FALLS CITY -- After a slow start to their season, the Falls City Beavers continued to improve throughout the year. The team may have started out at 0-2, but after eight straight wins, including a 49-14 win over Bruni last Friday, the Beavers are once again the District 16-1A champs, and will make another trip into the playoffs.
With their bye week falling on the final week of the regular season, the Beavers played their final regular season game of the year last Friday at home against the Bruni Badgers. Falls City came out strong in the first half, and turned in a performance that couldn’t be matched by the team lined up across the field.
The trademark ground-and-pound offense of Falls City served it well against Bruni, but it was actually the aerial attack that hurt the Badgers first. Beaver quarterback Cameron Soto connected with Wade Jimerson for the first touchdown of the game, as the play went for 52 yards and 6 points. Scott Lyssy came on for the point-after kick, and the score was quickly 7-0 in favor of Falls City. Later in the first, the Beavers scored their second touchdown of the game on a 9-yard run from Soto.
The Beaver scoring efforts continued in the second quarter, as Falls City added another four touchdowns to the board. The first came on a 4-yard run from Cody Jendrusch, followed by a 20-yard touchdown run from Dean Gaskamp. Jendrusch then scored his second touchdown of the game on another 4-yard run with 1:12 to play in the half, and the hometown fans enjoyed a 35-0 lead as Falls City lined up for the kickoff.
Unfortunately for the Beavers, there was a breakdown on special teams, and Martin Benavides of Bruni took the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. The extra point that followed was good. Then, a mere 30 seconds later, Falls City got those points back, as Soto connected with Stephen Poole for a touchdown from 39 yards out. Lyssy added the extra point, and the Beavers took a 42-7 lead into halftime.
Late in the third, Falls City added a little insurance as Jendrusch capped off a Beaver scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run from scrimmage. Lyssy’s kick left the Beavers with a 49-7 advantage and 2:50 left to play in the quarter.
Bruni managed to score on a 1-yard run in the fourth, but never really threatened to make any sort of comeback. When the game clock expired, it was Falls City with a big 49-14 victory to close out its regular season schedule.
The Beavers spread the work evenly throughout the night, as several players got their touches. Jon Swierc led the ground game with 94 yards on 11 carries, followed by Soto with 58 yards, David Brodsky with 54, and Gaskamp with 52. Kendall Kanak ran for 21 yards, Phillip Lyssy ran for 20, and Jendrusch added 10.
Soto completed 6 of 11 passes for 168 yards, connecting with Jimerson for 83 yards, Gaskamp for 46 yards, and Poole for another 39.
The Beaver defense did an excellent job containing Bruni, as the Badgers managed only 80 yards of offense. The Bruni running game was held to just 75 yards on 29 carries, and the passing game earned just 5 yards. Bruni was held to just five first downs, and was forced to punt the ball eight times.
The win puts the Beavers at 8-2 on the year, and 6-0 in district play. Falls City can add the District 16-1A title to the trophy case, and will spend the final week of the regular season enjoying a bye, as the Beavers prepare for a playoff run as the defending state champs.
