Floresville 16

Victoria East 22

VICTORIA -- In desperate need of a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Floresville Tigers traveled to Victoria last Friday to face the East Titans. The Tigers fought hard and put themselves in a position to win at the end of the game, but a big Titan stand at the 2-yard line put an end to the game, and any chance of a playoff appearance for Floresville. Victoria East won by the score of 22-16.

The first touchdown of the game came early in the first quarter, as Titan quarterback Nic Wallace connected with Justin Kalinowski for 60 yards and a touchdown. The Titans added the extra point, and the score was quickly 7-0. Floresville came back to score on an Estevan Mireles field goal with 6:19 remaining in the first, and the teams moved into the second stanza in a close 7-3 game.

Less than a minute into the second quarter, Victoria East scored its second touchdown of the game on a 9-yard passing strike from Wallace to Kalinowski. A minute later, the duo teamed up for their third passing touchdown of the game, as Wallace hit Kalinowski for 28 yards and the score. Joel Gonzales ran in the 2-point conversion for East, and the score was 22-3.

The Tigers did a good job in responding to the Titan scores with two touchdowns of their own in the second quarter. Matthew Crockett set up the first with a good kickoff return to midfield. Ruben Benavides took over from there, carrying the ball three times for 48 yards, including a 35-yard touchdown run. Mireles added the point-after, and the score was 22-10 in favor of the Titans.

With time winding down in the half, the Tigers put together another good drive, this time of 88 yards. Benavides and Hector Villegas split the running duties, while Tiger quarterback Colby Shodrock and Crockett helped things along with a 33-yard passing play. Villegas took the ball from the 17-yard line, and ran for a touchdown with just 1:38 to play in the half. The 2-point conversion was no good, and the score stood at 22-16 at the half.

Things looked promising on the first play of the second half for Floresville, as Jacob Flores recovered a Titan fumble. The offense was stopped short, however, and the drive yielded no points.

The teams battled equally throughout the third and fourth quarters, and the ball went back to the Tigers with 1:31 remaining on the clock. Floresville began its final drive of the game from its own 23-yard line, and moved down the field with solid running from Villegas and Benavides. Flores also pulled in a nice 16-yard completion to advance the Tigers’ position. As the clock counted down to zero, the Titans made one final defensive stand, stopping Villegas and the Tigers on the 2-yard line. The buzzer sounded, and the Tigers found themselves short of the goal line, and out of the playoff picture.

The Tiger defense played a great game against East, and recorded a number of sacks. The Tiger front was tough all night, and held the Titan runners to well below their averages.

On offense, Villegas led the offensive efforts with 159 yards on 33 carries, and Benavides tallied 116 yards on 17 carries. Shodrock completed just two of 12 passing attempts for 49 yards, connecting with Crockett once for 33, and Flores once for 16 yards.

The Tigers will end their season at home this Friday, Nov. 4, as they host unbeaten Port Lavaca Calhoun. The Sandcrabs come to Floresville with a perfect 9-0 record, and lead District 30-4A at 4-0. Kickoff at Eschenburg Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
