Poth’s own set of ‘bully-busters’
By Kenya Barrientos
If there are ghosts -- bullies -- on the loose, who are you going to call? Ghostbusters -- safety ambassadors!
Started on Sept. 13, the Safe School Ambassador program, led by Poth High School Counselor Nicole Dziuk, is dedicated to decreasing the amount of bullying and creating a safer and more positive environment in schools.
The safety ambassadors may have started work over a month ago, but how has the program helped our school so far?
Freshman Clayton Jaskinia said, “Well, it has helped our school by giving the ambassadors ways to help other students.”
Junior Karla Gomez said, “It helped a lot because when someone is getting made fun of, there is someone to speak up for them and tells [the bully] to stop.”
Junior Craig Kilgore replied, “It’s been really great [for the school].”
And senior Kadalina Escobedo commented, “The ambassadors are actually helping others who need the help with bullying and other problems.”
So the program has been overall beneficial to the school, but what about other students that aren’t in the program? Have they done anything to get on board with the anti-bullying?
Karla said, “Yes I have. People don’t have to be part of the program to be an ambassador.”
What are some of your other thoughts on the ambassador program?
Clayton said, “Well, by giving the student body ways to help other students, I myself see that there has been less bullying, name-calling, etc.”
Karla said, “I think this program is a really good program to stop all bullying. I also think it’s really great because students know more of what’s going on than teachers do, so I think students are more helpful.”
Kaddy said, “I like it and it really helps others.”
As Karla said, you don’t have to be part of the program to be an ambassador, so the next time you see someone getting bullied, speak up and become yet another of Poth’s “bully-busters.”
