The main issue with the upcoming presidential campaign is, of course, the economy, but one wouldn’t know that by watching the nightly news.

The newscasts have led with “The Herman Cain story” since the liberal blog Politico first came out with unspecified allegations from unnamed sources, quoting unnamed people.

And it’s gone viral with the so-called news media, including the talk shows. Instead of feeding into the frenzy, you’d think that at least some of these conservative talk shows would choose to ignore this nonsense -- unless and until something of substance is proven.

While the Cain nonsense continues, no one is watching the manipulation in Washington. They are too busy shoving microphones and cameras into the faces of political candidates. That’s easier than asking them tough questions.

They should be addressing the real issues of an out-of-control Obama Adminstration ruling by executive order, or the financial crises in Europe and Greece, or the plight of Israel.

It is a fact that anyone can make an allegation and if the press repeats it, it soon takes on a life of its own. That’s is what Cain’s opponents are counting on -- and what a shame.

Let’s just say, for the sake of argument, that there is some deep, dark secret side of Cain’s past. Say he drank too much at some point more than a decade ago, and did make a pass at some women. As the head of a major corporation, he certainly would be vulnerable to false or malicious charges as a way of getting a quick payoff. We do know that back in the 1990s, it was far easier than it is today to make an allegation just for being made to feel “uncomfortable.”

For all of women’s gains, that seems to be one area in which they have remained rather delicate: “Please don’t say anything that might make me feel uncomfortable! I might faint -- or sue your company.”

We don’t know if these supposed victims had also been drinking and leading him on. We just don’t know, so why ruin a man’s life over something about which we cannot prove.

As long as these women can continue to speak with no responsibility for their actions or accountability for the accusations they make, there’s no way to combat the feeding frenzy of an irresponsible press. Since the allegations were first made public, you can’t turn on the radio or a watch a news program without hearing more about the Herman Cain story.

But is there a story?

Not if you look at some of the past left-leaning candidates. Remember Bill Clinton? And those were not anonymous allegations made against him, but instead of providing protection for those women testifying against Clinton, the press ridiculed them.

Their lives were ruined.

Then look at how the media treated John Edwards when he was running for president. Not only did he have an affair, but he fathered a child with another woman while his wife was being treated for terminal cancer. He, too, was actually protected by the press.

So what’s wrong with Herman Cain? Is he “too black” for the media?

The very idea that they would give credence to such unsubstantiated dribble to the extent that very real and very serious issues gets ignored is outrageous.

You can like Herman Cain or not.; support him or not, but if you have an ounce of fairness, you can see the injustice in the way he is being treated. Is this just their way of giving him the Palin treatment?

What a shame.
