Brahmas overwhelm Wolves Nov. 4
Stockdale sophomore running back Matt Valadez (8) looks for running room up the field during the Brahmas’ big win over Dilley to close out the regular season.
STOCKDALE -- In their final regular season game of the year, the Stockdale Brahmas turned in a dominant second-half performance, smashing the Dilley Wolves 46-13, and creating a wave of momentum they can ride into the playoffs.
Stockdale struck first during its Nov. 4 game with Dilley, and it was senior Trevor Baumann who did the honors, racing 31 yards for a touchdown. Kelson Alderman added the point-after kick for the Brahmas, and the score was 7-0 with 9:07 to play in the first.
The Wolves had a response ready for Stockdale, though, and Will Urban ran 46 yards for 6 points and a touchdown of his own. The extra point was also good, and the teams were once again tied with 8:48 remaining on the first-quarter clock.
Early in the second quarter, Dilley took its first and only lead of the game, as Orlando Bernal capped off a drive for the Wolves from 1 yard out. The extra point was no good, but the Brahmas suddenly found themselves needing to play a little “catch-up.”
As time wound down in the half, the Brahmas marched ever closer to the end zone. Then, with just 43 ticks remaining on the clock, Baumann scored his second touchdown of the game, running in from 9 yards out. The point-after attempt failed, and the teams headed for the locker rooms with the score tied at 13-all.
While the teams were competitive in the first half, everything changed in the second half. The Brahma defense all but shut down the Dilley offensive unit, and Stockdale continued to put points on the board.
The first score of the second half was courtesy of Cody Hastings, as he took a Dilley punt and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown. Matt Valadez then scored on a 22-yard run from scrimmage midway through the third quarter, and the Brahmas led the Wolves, 27-13.
The Stockdale defense continued to shut down the Dilley offense, and the Brahmas took advantage of every opportunity they had with the ball. Senior quarterback Colton West decided to do a little work through the air, and connected with Baumann for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns. The first went for 20 yards, and the second was good from 35 yards away.
With a 40-13 lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the game was all but over. Many of the Brahmas’ younger players got some game-time experience, and one even spent a little time in the end zone. With 1:48 to play in the game, Deryk Mayberry took the ball from the 10-yard line, and celebrated a touchdown as the clock rolled under two minutes. When the final buzzer sounded, it was Stockdale with the big win, 46-13.
Statistically speaking, Dilley had a good game, racking up 337 yards of offense. The Wolves ran for 175 yards and threw for another 162. The Brahma defense made plays when it had to, though, and came up with three big turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
The Brahma offense had a great game, earning nearly 500 yards of offense. West completed 10 of 13 passing attempts for 210 yards, and Baumann and Valadez combined for 241 yards of rushing offense. Valadez had 135, Baumann was good for 106, Darion McMahan ran for 25 yards, Mayberry tallied 17, and West ran one time for a yard. Hastings led the Stockdale receivers with 114 yards, followed by Baumann with 66, Valadez with 21, and Josh Vela with 9 yards.
The Brahmas end the regular season with a record of 6-4, and were 4-2 in district play. Stockdale will face San Saba in the first round of the playoffs, with the game set for this Friday, Nov. 11. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Canyon Lake High School.
