LA VERNIA -- With a 50-6 blowout of Pleasanton last Friday night at home, the La Vernia Bear football team finished the 2011 regular season with a 5-5 overall record, and a 4-2 District 28-3A record, punching its ticket to the playoffs.
The Bears needed a win over the Eagles, and the team delivered in a big way. While La Vernia’s defense essentially put a halt to the Pleasanton offense, the Bear offense showed its scoring ability, running into the end zone early and often.
The first score of the game came at the 8:27 mark in the first quarter, as senior running back Aaron Grubb found an opening from 15 yards out. He also ran in the 2-point conversion for La Vernia to make it an 8-0 game.
Later in the first, Pleasanton looked like it was going to make a game out of it, as the Eagles scored through the air on a Luke Walters pass to Mike Sorola for 42 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles attempted to tie the game with a 2-point conversion, but the pass failed, and the score stood at 8-6.
The Bear offense quickly went back to work from there, and Landon Richter capped off the La Vernia drive with a 5-yard touchdown run from scrimmage. Alec Dews kicked the extra point to give the Bears a 15-6 lead.
In the second quarter, Grubb scored his second touchdown of the night with a 26-yard scamper. On the Eagles’ next possession, the Bear defense hurt Pleasanton a bit further, as Trayvon Boyd came up with an interception and took it 12 yards to the house for another 6 points. Grubb then earned his third touchdown of the night on an 81-yard run. With three point-after kicks from Dews, La Vernia led 36-6 at the half.
Less than three minutes into play in the third quarter, the Bears struck again, this time on a 15-yard run from Vince Gill for the touchdown. David Brewton scored La Vernia’s last touchdown of the game in the closing seconds of the contest, as he sprinted 59 yards for the touchdown. Dews was perfect kicking the ball, and the final score stood at 50-6.
Richter led the Bear running game with 152 yards on 11 carries, followed by Grubb with 136 yards on seven carries. Brewton ran four times for 64 yards, and Gill added the touchdown run of 15 yards. Gill completed all three of his passing attempts, and Colby Simms completed two of his four attempts. Kenny Moehrig led the Bear receiving corps with 21 yards on two receptions. Grubb, Jose Sahagun, and Levi Andrews each had receptions as well.
The Bear defense held the Eagle offense well, allowing only 53 yards of rushing offense. Walters did complete 12 passes for 121 yards for Pleasanton, but the Bears kept the Eagles out of the end zone most of the night, and ended the game with a victory.
With the win, the Bears move into the playoffs, where they will face the Somerset Bulldogs (6-4) in a bi-district matchup. The teams will meet this Friday, Nov. 11, at Harlandale Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
