SAN ANTONIO -- After falling in straight sets to Brandeis last week, the 2011 volleyball season officially came to an end for the Lady Hornets of East Central. The team overcame youth and inexperience to finish third in the District 28-5A standings this year, but didn’t get the start it needed to survive the Broncos.

Brandeis seniors Katie MacLeay and Analise Cardenas led a powerful Bronco attack that left East Central on its heels. The Lady Hornets trailed from the onset, and eventually fell in the first game of the best-of-five matchup, 25-13.

In the second game, it was déjà vu all over again, as MacLeay, Cardenas, and Taylor Mastin rained down thundering shots from across the net. The Lady Hornets did their best to fight back, but fell in the second game, 25-12.

By the time the third game got going, East Central was into a rhythm and played quite well. Senior Katie Foster led the team with her strong play, and the team got big contributions from fellow seniors Alexa Padalecki and Megan Dugie. In the end, however, the Broncos were still too much for East Central, and Brandeis wrapped up the match with a 25-22 win in game three.

“We took too long to get started tonight, and Brandeis played well,” said East Central Head Coach Robyn Wunderlich, “but this team has improved so much this season.

“I am proud of our girls,” she added. “They have worked hard and been great teammates to each other. We wish our seniors the best of luck!”

East Central ends the year with an overall record of 17-22, but the team did finish 6-4 in district play and qualified for the playoffs, yet again. East Central will graduate six players from this year’s roster, but will return nine next season, and should be fun to watch.
