La Vernia cross-country girls qualify for state meet
Members of the La Vernia Lady Bear cross-country team celebrate their Region IV championship. The Lady Bears will now advance to the state meet.
After a solid performance this past weekend at the Region IV Championships, the La Vernia girls cross-country team will pack its bags and set its sights at competing at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Cross Country State Championships. This is the fourth trip to state for the Lady Bear cross-country program.
In addition to the team’s qualifying performance, three Lady Bears qualified individually as well -- the most ever by either a girls or boys team in La Vernia. Freshmen Madi Trees (11:49.90) and Olivia Hinojosa (11:51.4) finished as silver and bronze medalists just seconds behind defending state silver medalist Susan Kemper (11:44.9), a senior from Liberty Hill. Joining them was sophomore teammate Bailee Vrana (12:29.4), who finished eighth in the race. Vrana is now a two-time individual state qualifier.
Rounding out the team’s scorers at the regional meet were Shaley Trammel (12:50, 18th) and Shayler Ring (13:27, 48th). Also racing for La Vernia were Brianna Kruciak (13:34.5, 60th) and Isabelle Reynosa (13:43, 70th). Trammel follows older sisters Karley (2004) and Maicey (2007) to run at the state championships.
“It was a very tough, new course for us, but we handled it well,” said La Vernia Head Coach Richard Hinojosa. “Our girls are very excited about qualifying for the state championships. We are humbled to be able to represent our school and community.”
“The field is as strong as it’s been in years,” Hinojosa added, “but we’re going to line up and race just like we’ve done all season.”
La Vernia is now 151-3 against all opponents so far this season.
The top six ranked 3A teams in the state all qualified to square off against each other, including defending champion Lucas Lovejoy. The 3A girls race is scheduled for 1:20 p.m.
The La Vernia boys were also in action at regionals, and finished fifth in a loaded field that included the No. 1-, 5-, 10-, and 12-ranked teams in the state. Scoring for the Bears were Roberto Guzman (17:03.5, 13th), Dillon Goan (17:10.4, 17th), Nick Padgett (17:49, 39th), Colby Huth (18:02, 55th), and Erik Tuttle (18:25.5, 69th). Also racing for the team were Andrew Cribb (19:31.6, 117th) and Brayden Boren.
