INDIANAPOLIS -- The East Central FFA Chapter participated in the National FFA Floriculture Career Development Event and AgriScience Fair during the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 19-22. Holly Bailey, Amy Castleman, Brooke Kosub, and Christi Schick comprise the state-winning floriculture team, coached by Lorie Kempen. This team was rated “gold” and placed 12th in the nation. Amy, Brooke, and Christi were individually rated gold and Holly was rated silver.
Students must identify plants, make pertinent decisions in solving day-to-day problems that occur in any part of the business, and an exam tests their general knowledge. Skill activities, such as flower arranging and corsage design, allow students to showcase their knowledge and talent. The event is one of 23 career-development events held annually at the National FFA Convention.
Lindsay Hamer also competed in the AgriScience Fair, a competition for FFA members who are interested in the science and technology of agriculture. Lindsay was gold-rated as she competed with 60 other engineering students. She earned second place in this division.
The AgriScience Fair is held each year during the National FFA Convention. Students can compete in the national fair in one of six categories -- animal systems, environmental services/natural resources, food products and processing systems, plant systems, power structural, and technical systems and social systems.
Each participant is given a gold, silver, or bronze rating and receives a pin within their division. The third-place participant in each division receives a $100 cash award. The second-place participant in each division receives a $200 cash award. The first-place participant in each division receives a $350 cash award and a plaque.
