The love of reading is one of the most important gifts that parents can instill in their children. In an effort to assist parents in reaching this goal, La Vernia Primary held its annual Literacy Night. More than 175 people were in attendance. The cafeteria was buzzing with activity and children in costumes.

The evening began with a delicious meal served by the LVISD child nutrition staff. The meal consisted of a variety of sliders, veggies, and yummy desserts. Children loved demonstrating to their parents how to “go through the cafeteria line.”

Children were called to the front of the cafeteria and the book Read to Your Bunny by Rosemary Wells was shared with the group. Next, the main attraction, The Ghost’s Dinner by Jacques Duquenney, was read.

Children were then instructed that at the tables there were ghost cut-outs and children were encouraged to write their own story about a ghost coming to dinner.

Parents assisted children as stories were written. Students also had the option to make bookmarks and create a lollipop ghost.

To conclude the evening, door prizes were given out. What were the door prizes? Books, of course!
