This is hardly new at all, because two generations ago, people were saying “Buy American.” Sam Walton began his giant Walmart conglomerate with a highly promoted slogan to “Buy American.”

Later that slogan was dropped that in favor of “Always Low Prices” which allowed them to market cheaply priced goods from overseas. Other retailers followed, and America quickly forgot patriotism and adapted to the less expensive imports.

Now, however, they may be taking a second look.

A popular e-mail message now circulating ( http://bit.ly/newamxmass) touts a “New American Christmas!” Not only does it promote buying American products, but encourages thinking outside the box when it comes to gift-giving. Think services instead of “stuff.” Giving gift certificates to local shops, including the barber and beauty shop, the handyman, landscapers, house cleaning, and other services will be much appreciated by the receiver and also promote local businesses.

This idea follows nicely with another push in its second year: Small Business Saturday to follow Black Friday as a day to shop “small” and celebrate local small businesses that contribute so much to their communities. It has the possibility of becoming the biggest sales day of the year. It’s not there yet, but why not? It is sandwiched in between Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and Cyber Monday.

Shopping Small Business Saturday, Nov. 26, is a great idea whose time has not quite come, but it will. With a little planning every small business can participate by putting up signs and advertising their own sales.

The message here is, more than anything else, don’t wait for your government “stimulus package.” Get on the bandwagon and begin promoting your own business in creative ways. As 70 percent of Americans want China’s trading privileges to be withdrawn, let’s show them. We can do it ourselves.

Quit buying foreign-made goods, including food products. Check the labels and buy something else, or buy nothing. It’s probably something you can do without and don’t need anyway. Show Congress that we don’t need them to act; the American people can take it upon themselves to act.

“Do it yourself, America!”

Start today. Show them that we Americans are not as dumb as some think we are. If the Chinese knowingly send us inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys, quit buying them. Make this Christmas the best one yet for those to whom you give, and for the small businesses that support services that make your town what it is.

Take back America one shopping trip at a time.
