John G. Orzabal Sr.
John G. Orzabal Sr., 62, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas. John was born on Oct. 31, 1949, in Wauseon, Ohio, to Encarnacion and Catarina Orzabal.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Celia Walston and Helen Martinez.
While attending high school at Milby High in Houston, John made the decision to join the military. He enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 19, where he served his country with valor and pride. He sustained numerous injuries during his tour of duty in Vietnam, earning two Purple Hearts and several other awards. John spent more than a year hospitalized for his injuries sustained in Vietnam, which included being shot 13 times. His Marine Corps principles and the Word of God served him well later in life as he continued to uphold that “never give up” spirit!
John worked for several title companies over the years, ending with First American as a title examiner in 2002. His many co-workers and friends remember him fondly as always keeping the workplace interesting with his pranks and practical jokes!
Diagnosed with cancer in 2003, John embarked upon a spiritual journey teaching those around him to live life “one day at a time” and each day, with great passion. He was cancer-free for five years with the cancer returning in late 2008. John never lost his sense of humor nor his love for God! Even during his many hospitalizations, he took the time to share his faith to all who would listen and to encourage them to never give up but to always trust God.
John leaves behind to continue his legacy a loving and devoted wife, Elsie Coronado Orzabal; his sons, John Orzabal Jr. of San Antonio, Ezra P. Coronado and wife Erin of Cedar Park, and Godswill Orzabal of Floresville; his daughters, Sylvia “Missy” Orzabal of San Antonio and Jaye Garcia and husband William of San Antonio; his sister, Mary Buchanan of Bowden, Ga.; his brothers, Guadalupe “Guero” Orzabal of Peoria, Ariz., Raymond Orzabal of Ganado, and Martin Orzabal of Houston; five grandchildren, Lauren, Vanessa, Courtney, Guillermo, and Ava Marie; his great-grandson, Landon; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held Monday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. in the Franklin Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville. His home-going celebration was held at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Interment was held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. A funeral procession departed from the funeral home at 8 a.m.
