San Saba 27

Stockdale 7

CANYON LAKE -- Unable to find the end zone during the second half, the Stockdale Brahma football team watched its season end last Friday night in a 27-7 bi-district loss to San Saba.

The Armadillos got things rolling early in the first quarter, as running back Zack Davis cut through the Brahma defense for 73 yards and a touchdown. The point-after was no good, but Stockdale found itself having to play a bit of catch-up as it trailed 6-0.

In the closing minutes of the first quarter, the Brahmas found themselves deep in Armadillo territory, and senior Trevor Baumann lit up the scoreboard with a 12-yard scamper across the goal line. Kelson Alderman came on for the extra point, and Stockdale took a 7-6 lead. The teams were locked at that score throughout the second quarter of play, and the Brahmas took a 1-point advantage to the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter looked a lot like the start of the first, as Davis scored for San Saba on a short 1-yard run from scrimmage. The extra point kick was good, and the Armadillos retook the lead at 13-7. The battle raged throughout the third quarter, but San Saba made it a two-possession game with just two minutes to play in the stanza, as Luke Cox found an opening and put 6 more points on the board with a 17-yard run. Add the extra point, and Stockdale was looking at a 20-7 deficit.

Stockdale Head Coach Josh West has a never-say-die attitude, and he kept his Brahmas fighting until the very end. San Saba was able to put the game away with just over three minutes to play in the contest, though, as Davis showed off his sprinting speed with a 46-yard dash into the end zone. The point-after was good, and the Armadillos put the finishing touches on a 27-7 win.

Statistically speaking, the Brahmas played a solid game and presented a well-balanced attack to San Saba. West completed 11 of his 19 passing attempts, earning a total of 111 yards. Cody Hastings was the leading Stockdale receiver with six grabs for 52 yards, and Baumann was right behind him with four catches for 44 yards. Matt Valadez caught one pass for another 15.

Baumann led the Stockdale running game against the Armadillos, earning 153 yards on 16 carries. Valadez earned 67 yards on nine touches, and West ran the ball seven times for 44 yards.

The Brahma defense did a good job containing Davis and the San Saba offense, holding the team to far fewer points than the Armadillos earned in their last three victories.

Stockdale ends its 2011 campaign with an overall record of 6-5. The Brahmas qualified for the playoffs for the first time in several years, and made a respectable showing in the process. The team will have some big holes to fill in 2012, but there is a renewed spirit in Stockdale, and winning often becomes habitual.
