La Vernia Bears blank Bulldogs in first round of playoffs
La Vernia senior Aaron Grubb (5) snatches a Somerset pass out of the air for an interception during last Friday night’s bi-district matchup.
La Vernia 28
SAN ANTONIO -- With 21 first-half points, and a defense that is willing to bend but rarely breaks, the La Vernia Bears shut out the Somerset Bulldogs en route to a 28-0 bi-district win at Harlandale Memorial Stadium last Friday.
The Bear offense looked great throughout the contest, seemingly moving the ball at will. La Vernia likes to pound the ball on the ground when possible, but also shows a willingness to throw the ball often enough to keep opposing defenses honest. Such was the case in San Antonio.
The scoring got started midway through the first quarter as La Vernia senior backer Aaron Grubb outran the Bulldog defense for 59 yards and the score. Alec Dews showed off his leg on the extra point, and the Bears led 7-0. Later in the first, Bear quarterback Vince Gill found some running room from just outside the red zone, and he scampered 26 yards to the nicest patch of lawn on the field. After the Dews kick, the Bear fans enjoyed a 14-0 game.
La Vernia’s defense continued to put pressure on the Bulldog offense, and the Bears’ offense continued to take advantage of the opportunities. Already leading by two scores, Gill and the La Vernia offense moved down to the 16-yard line, and the quarterback carried it in for his second touchdown of the game. Dews’ toe remained true on the extra point, and the Bears held a 21-0 lead at the break.
La Vernia’s final touchdown of the game came in the final seconds of the third quarter, as Grubb raced 40 yards for his second touchdown of the night. Dews nailed the point-after, and the Bears rode out a 28-0 advantage until the game clock expired.
“What a game,” said one excited Bear fan after the victory. “The defense was amazing, and it was great to see the offense score at will.”
Grubb led the Bear offense with 128 rushing yards on 11 carries, and Gill successfully ran the ball 11 times for 59 yards. Landon Richter picked up 32 yards on his six carries, and Errol Warren got in on the action with three carries for 6 yards.
Gill completed 1 of 6 passing attempts, and it was good for 36 yards to Levi Andrews. Grubb also threw a pass for the Bears, and he completed the toss to Kenny Moehrig for another 35 paces.
The stingy Bear defense played up to its competition, and held Bulldog quarterback Joey Dominguez at bay. Dominguez attempted 25 passes, but completed just eight throws for 103 yards and was intercepted twice by La Vernia. Dominguez also was held to just 46 rushing yards on the night. In total, La Vernia’s defense allowed Somerset just 228 yards of offense.
With the win, the Bears advance to the area championship, where they will face the Lampasas Badgers out of District 25-3A. The game will be played this Friday, Nov. 18, at Reeves Athletic Complex in Round Rock. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
