Jaguars end season in quarterfinals
GOLIAD -- It was a good year for the Floresville Jaguar volleyball team, but after falling to Corpus Christi Calallen in Region IV quarterfinal play, the team’s season has come to an end.
The Jags got into the playoffs after finishing fourth in District 30-4A, and made a strong showing in their bi-district and area championship matches. Floresville began its playoff run with a win over Brackenridge, and then followed it up with an impressive victory over Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway. When the Jags met the Lady Wildcats of Calallen in the regional quarterfinals, however, the outcome was different.
The Jags were forced to play from behind early in the first set of the match, and Calallen was sure to maintain pressure throughout. In the race to 25, it was the Lady Wildcats who won, as they beat Floresville 25-12 in the first game of the best-of-five series.
Floresville Head Coach Regan Curran got her team to regroup, and the Jags made a stronger showing in the second game, but in the end, it was Calallen finishing on top, 25-18.
Down two games, the Jags did what they could to climb back into the match, but Calallen held Floresville at a distance, and took the third and final game by the score of 25-12.
Jamie Crowder, Jessica Castro, and Sonja Tweeten led the Floresville offensive effort with 7 kills each, followed by Kyndal Bippert with 6 kills, and Melanie Reed with 3. Brooke DeLeon also contributed a kill during the match. Michaela Sinfuentes tallied 19 assists against Calallen, and Sam Flores pitched in another 2. Castro was responsible for the Jaguars’ lone service ace.
On defense, Castro led the team in digs with 12, followed by Flores and Sinfuentes with 7 apiece. Bippert and Reed each had 3 digs; and Crowder, Tweeten, and Samantha Sauceda each added one.
The Jags ended their season with an overall record of 25-16. The team will lose some valuable seniors to graduation in the spring, but should be back strong next fall, as they look to improve upon the great season they had in 2011.
