SAN ANTONIO -- With a trio of straight-sets victories over Kingsville Academy, Schulenburg, and Marion last week, the Poth Pirettes have punched yet another ticket to the state volleyball tournament in San Marcos.

The Pirettes, who have proven to be nearly unstoppable this season, made quick work of their regional opponents en route to the state tournament. During its quarterfinal matchup, Poth took out Kingsville Academy 25-13, 25-3, 25-16. The Pirettes then advanced to the Region IV tournament at Blossom Athletic Center, and blew past Schulenburg 25-15, 25-21, 25-15 in the semifinals. With just one more team to beat, Poth squared off with Marion in the final, and barely broke a sweat during the 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 victory.

With another Region IV championship in the trophy case, Thursday’s trip to the Strahan Coliseum will mark the Pirettes’ 13th state tournament appearance, eight of which have come in the last nine years. Since 2003, Poth has been to the state tournament every year except 2008.

The Pirettes will face the Lady Cougars of Jewett Leon in the state semifinal Thursday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. Leon boasts a season record of 44-2, and also holds a strong legacy of playing for state supremacy. The Lady Cougars have been to the state tournament 23 times, and have made the trip seven times over the last 10 years.

Should the Pirettes defeat the Lady Cougars, they will advance to the state final, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19, at 11:30 a.m.

In the other Class 2A semifinal matchup, the defending state champion White Oak Ladynecks (42-3) will face the Nocona Lady Indians (34-8). White Oak defeated Poth in the state championship match last year.

Strahan Coliseum is located at the corner of Comal and East 20th streets. on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos.
