1924-2011

Joyce Theo Thurmond Whitworth, 87, of Pasadena, Texas, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, in Houston. Joyce, affectionately known as “Sis,” was born in Gonzales County on March 15, 1924, to Wiley Jefferson and Janie Catherine (O’Neill) Thurmond. She was a member of Ephesus Primitive Baptist Church in Houston.

Joyce attended school in Gonzales County, graduating from Nixon High School. She later moved to Houston where she worked as a bookkeeper for Sears & Roebuck. She met and married Boyd Whitworth in 1952. Together, they enjoyed their home in Pasadena for many years, as well as their vacation home in Belmont overlooking the Guadalupe River. Their doors were always open to friends and family. Many holiday gatherings, Thanksgiving feasts, and “ice cream socials” are cherished memories by all who shared those special times.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Boyd Vernon Whitworth; sisters Elsie Gaylord, Henrietta Thurmond, Dorothy Alford, and infants Dottie, Dollie, and Norma Thurmond; and brothers Rufus Thurmond, Cleo Thurmond, and Gaston Thurmond.

Joyce is survived by her brothers, Joe Newman Thurmond of San Antonio and twin J. L. Thurmond and wife Cletty of Belmont; sister-in-law Ophelia Thurmond of Boerne; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as many close friends, neighbors, and church family.

Visitation was held Monday, Nov. 21, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon.

A funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Elder Tom Brown officiating.

Interment followed in the Caraway Cemetery near Nixon.

Serving as pallbearers were Duane Alford, T.O. Gaylord, Dick Howell, Russell Riggs, David Schutter, and Don Thurmond. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Gevan Alford, Thurmond Gaylord, and Horace Glenn.

Memorial donations may be made to San Marcos Primitive Baptist Church, P.O. Box 186, Luling, TX 78648 or to Caraway Cemetery c/o Vera Caraway, 2754 F.M. 1682, Leesville, TX 78122.
